Large Bulletin Board Letters Printable – Being a teacher’s daughter meant staying after school to help your mom with #alltheschoolthings. Stapling papers, sorting classwork, sharpening pencils.
The teacher daughter work that I remember most vividly was tracing, laminating and cutting out my mother’s master letters (which were funky design letters that were cut on label stock) onto various types of construction paper. ).

Man! How I despised the bite. Well, I’m here. an adult. Even a teacher. Cut out letters with funky designs.

We’re a long way from our mom’s typeface designs and boring, run-of-the-mill letterpress die-cutting machines.
But I still cut my letters. In today’s world, we have managed to take a step back…tracing!
You might think this is the easy part, but for me it’s the hardest. There are so many fonts to choose from! KG Fonts, Hello Fonts, Cupcake Fonts, MTF Fonts… the list goes on.
I want to use PowerPoint for all my documents. So after choosing my font, I type the letters I want for my bulletin board. I like PowerPoint because it is (in my opinion) the easiest program to use when using text books. I can more easily format my letters to fit more on a page.

Make sure your letters are the correct size. If you want them bigger, increase the size. If you need them smaller, try to fit more on one page. You can use a vertical template or a horizontal template to use larger or smaller fonts.
Make sure you make the “fill” of the letter white or “none” and make the outline of the letter black. This happens during tracing because only the outline is visible when printed.
You can also make the letter outline bold so you can add a black line to your bulletin board title (see example below).
I love using Astrobrights for my paper! If you want black letters, you need to add a second step. You can print your letters on white paper from your computer. Then take the black construction paper (cut to size) and copy the letters from the white paper onto the black construction paper using a copier. You can also print black characters on your printer. But it takes a lot of ink!

You can also layer for stability. I will cut the pieces before cutting and then cut once the paper is shredded. Cut less, remember?
I love creating fun and interactive boards. If you’re looking for more ideas, check out my favorite elementary school classroom bulletin board colors you want! I promise it’s easy!
Making wall letters is super easy and best of all cheap! All you need is a printer to print with colored paper and black ink! Then you can label your entire classroom as much as you want, super cheap!
This easy step-by-step tutorial uses PowerPoint on PC. It might be different on a Mac or with different versions of PowerPoint, but I suspect it’s pretty similar! I can help if you need it in the comments section – I’ll help you out so don’t hesitate to ask questions there!
How To Make Your Own Bulletin Board Letters
It’s for creating your own bulletin board letters in any font/color/size/etc. to create. You want, like the math letters on my math board. Large colorful letters are perfect for creating “word walls”, “our best work” or any plaque you want to title!
If you’d like to see math activities on the board, I show these fun activities in my Building Number Sense 1st Grade post along with lots of ideas for introducing numbers at the beginning of the year!
Step 1: Open a new, blank PowerPoint slide and make it paper size This is the most technical-looking step, but I promise it’s easy, and if you do it once or twice, you’ll get the hang of it. You can do it in your sleep.
Most likely, when you open a new presentation, it will default to “widescreen” and display in both widescreen and landscape modes. I prefer to create a “Portrait” page by clicking DESIGN at the top and then the CHOOSE SIZE dropdown box and then Custom Slide Size.

This gives you a regular page in PowerPoint that you can print on regular copy paper. I do this before I make anything! It prints the page in portrait orientation on a regular sheet of copy paper. 🙂
Now for the fun part! Choose the font you want to use! I love the fonts. There are tons of free fonts for personal use on TpT. For this example, I’m using KG Shake It Off Chunky, one of my (many) favorites.
Click on the text field. Click anywhere on the page, hold down the mouse, drag the mouse diagonally to create a box, then release. It doesn’t matter how big you make the text box or where you place it – you can change it all later.
Set the size you want by entering a number in the Font Size field (usually a drop-down menu to the right of the font name). I entered 600 for my example.

To move the letter where you want it on the page, click on the dotted line of the text box to turn it into a solid line, which you can use to select the entire box. You can then use the mouse to drag the field to the desired position. Make sure your letter stays white (this is the page and how it will look when printed).
Highlight the letter by clicking on one side of the letter and dragging it to the other, then release. It should create a gray box above the letter, like this:
Click on the A with the small rectangle below. (It looks like an A with a rectangle below it, which you always click to change the font color.)
Click on Text Fill. Click on No Fill. Your letter will disappear for a second, don’t worry, it has to happen.

Then click Text Outline. Click on the solid line. Your letter should reappear as an outline (mostly in blue).
Then you’ll see a box just below that called Width. Its probability is mostly around 0.75. Make it as thick as you want…play with it by clicking the up and down arrows until you get the thickness you want. For my example, I used 18 pt, so I clicked the top arrow a lot. 🙂 [If you don’t want a border and just want a letter in a lighter color with no border, leave it at 0.75 so you can follow a very thin line when cutting.]
Repeat for any other letters you are spelling. You can easily do this by clicking on the slide you just created on the left, where a smaller version of the slide will appear. After clicking the slide, hold down CTRL + D (hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and press the letter D). It duplicates the slide in an exact copy, so you can only change the letter. You can press CTRL+D as many times as you want to spell as you want! 🙂
Just cut out the letters! Personally, I like to leave the wide black border and cut it to the edge.

If you want the borderless letters to be just the same letter in a lighter color, you may have left the width at 0.75 in step 3, so just cut them along that line.
For letters with inside sections, I recommend using a small knife from the craft store to cut out the inside sections as follows.
This is the mat for my rotary cutter that I love for cutting centers. You can check it out on this classroom essentials list, which is full of great things for the classroom including the bright paper I use and other fun supplies.
You can do this to make so many bulletin board stickers for your classroom! Your word wall, your math wall, your student work board, you name it! Create and label to your heart’s content! I love just making my own letters because it’s so cheap – just colored paper and black ink – and I can make them huge to brighten up any display. I really hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions or need any help! I will reply to this post to help you. 🙂
