The original logo of the Kansas State Wildcats team was young and silly. The badge features an image of a black cat walking in a sweater with a purple flag in its paws. The White Jersey had a bold purple “K” emblazoned on the side in a serif square; the same type of writing but in smaller lines was used to write the white word “Government” on the flag. He was a sociable badger with good manners and kindness, who lived with the group for almost twenty years.
The 1975 revision replaced the friendly cat with a wild and dangerous panther image in purple and black. The attacker is placed to the right of the large black “K” and underlined by the large word “State” in the same serif type, but in a smaller size and with fewer bars, this is very good. The status of the badge was very different from the friendly and simple badge from the 1950s. The new concept was about strength and combat.
The cat featured in the logo that was introduced in 1955 was very similar to Tom from the cartoon Tom and Jerry. In 1975, the sports program introduced a crest with the famous letter “K” and a purple cat next to it. The creature lost its beauty – now it was very scary.
In 1989, the current logo for the Kansas State Wildcats was adopted by the side of a cat’s head. It is shown in a completely invisible way.

As of 2019, the KSU men’s basketball team has participated in 31 NCAA Tournaments, seven National Invitational Tournaments, and the Commissioner’s National Invitational Tournament.
The team that started playing in 1897 is now coached by Mike Ahearn. The Wildcats won the 1928 Missouri Valley Conference championship. They also won two Big Six Conference championships. The Kansas State Wildcats (alternatively “Kansas State”, “K-State”, or “KSU”) are the athletic teams representing Kansas State University. The official team color is Royal Purple; white and silver are often used as complementary colors.
Kansas State participates in the NCAA Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) and has been a member of the Big 12 Conference since 1996. Originally, Kansas State participated in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference until 1912; Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1913 to 1928; and the Eighth Conference from 1928 to 1996 (known as the Big Six from 1928 to 1947 and the Big Seven from 1947 to 1957).

Kansas State offers four sports at the varsity level. As of May 2018, Kansas State has won more than 80 championships over the years, not counting titles from the former Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (see chart below).
The athletic department at Kansas State is one of the few in the United States, and the only one in Kansas, that operates without financial support from the student body.
A major change in the athletic teams offered at Kansas State occurred when the school started a women’s soccer program in the fall of 2016, and dropped women’s track at the end of the 2015-16 season.
Athletics began within the first decade of the founding of Kansas State Agricultural College in 1863, when studs began organizing and playing baseball games against Manhattanites.

Beginning in 1890, the baseball game between the faculty and the principals became an annual event on graduation day.
According to many sources, the interscholastic rivalry began on Thanksgiving Day in 1893, when the Kansas State football team defeated the St. Mary’s College 18-10.
(St. Mary’s was a strong athletic district, its alumni including baseball pioneers Charles Comiskey and Ted Sullivan.) This game, however, is not featured in the school’s history, and the first official championship is 14-loss -0 Fort. Riley at a football game on November 28, 1896.
At the turn of the century, Kansas State competed in the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, along with the University of Kansas and other state schools. In order to adopt a method of organizing sports, in 1911 a “sports committee” was established at the school to establish policies and organize competitions, among other tasks.

After successful athletics in the Kansas Conference, including the 1912 football championship, Kansas State was invited to join the prestigious Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) in 1913. In 1916 football and basketball coach Z.G. Clevger was named the school’s first Athletic Director.
Clevger was assisted in this role by the former German football star Schulz. In 1928, when the MVAA’s “Big Six” members left the small Missouri Valley schools, Kansas State was added to its membership.
The school’s commitment to athletics waned after that. According to former Wildcat reporter Dev Nelson, after World War II, Kansas State was one of the major schools that didn’t spend much money on its football program, or sports at all.
Between 1969 and 1975 the school added women’s programs, as well as cutting sports in: swimming, wrestling, gymnastics and tennis. As recently as 1987-1988 the University of Oklahoma (second smallest Big Eight school) recorded $12.5 million in athletics while Kansas State received only $5.5 million.
