This spring I had a conference with the girls’ teachers (Kindergarten and first grade). We’ve talked a lot about talking about books that are at the same reading level and the importance of series because of that. They can read a lot of books, exchange books, talk about people, etc. Each teacher explained the importance of talking about books for reading comprehension. It got me thinking: adults love book clubs, maybe little kids too.

The female teachers thought book clubs were appropriate for older children and I made some recommendations. Then I talked to my cousin who is an elementary school teacher about how to make a simple and effective book report to fill out at a club meeting.

1. Start the group: Our group is girls who enter the 1st and 2nd grades, which is my daughter’s age. I posted a message on our local mom’s Facebook group to see if she was interested in joining. We got more benefits than I thought, which is great! We decided to meet about 3 times during the summer and we chose a park where we would meet.
2. Choose Books: Check out the list of books for girls and books for boys here. We chose Sprout Street Neighbors for the first book because it contains several stories, each with the same character. I thought it would make it easier for the girls to talk and read.

4. Plan the club meeting: We meet at the playground for our club and go “meet” 10 girls at the picnic tables at a time. This is the easiest way to ensure that we can include everyone who is interested. We let the girls talk about the book with some tips: what’s your favorite part, who you like, etc. They will then complete the book report and discuss it further. Finally, they will do a simple craft related to the book: make a bookmark for the next book. I hope you get even more excited about reading it. 5. Before everyone leaves, we will announce the next book. All the girls will also get one of these cute “reading bracelets” because they are now in book club!
My daughter is very happy and that is the most important thing. To me, getting kids excited about reading is more important than the number of books or the level of books they read.
