Furie points to the “fearless and cool” nature of frogs to explain why people are drawn to green creatures. “They like to jump around, swim, breathe and eat insects. People enjoy jumping, swimming and relaxing, but very few enjoy eating insects,” he adds. “Perhaps this practice is preparing our societies for a time in the near future when insects are high in protein and can be harvested at a much lower cost to the environment than cows, chickens, dairy, etc.”
Memes are made to entertain the general public, and something about them resonates with people on a personal level. Even though he’s joking, Fury has more in common with frogs than you know. As a teenager, he remembers listening to The Doors’ song “Peace Frog”, wearing a frog charm necklace, and being fascinated by the frogs he caught outside. “All of this adds up to make the frog a powerful symbol of luck, creativity and childlike wonder,” he adds.

As for his creation, Fury is well aware of what makes Pepe so beloved by everyone who sees him: the appeal of diversity.
“Pepe is not just another bald white man – he’s a frog – frogs have an amazing cultural appeal,” he says. “Even when his eyes show mushroom clouds, his face is cold. We are all dying slowly, we all face our own mortality, and the archetype of the cold frog helps us to control ourselves and be better.”
We can only hope that the next frog to take a deep breath will be as beloved as its predecessor. Oh, and he can never be mistaken for a tea lizard. Amphibians deserve more respect than that, especially when they’re in the public eye.

This year, students voted to host a Meme Day at school so Highland Park had its first Meme Day! The purpose of Meme Day was to dress up and/or imitate your favorite meme or any meme on the internet and come to school as a meme.

The second student took the first souvenirs of Kermit the Frog drinking tea. He was very creative with his Kermit the Frog costume and took it to the next level by bringing his own tea (which he threw away) and making his own sign to go with his souvenir suit.
Some students have chosen to wear real memorabilia like Sebastien Izzet in a fun way without recreating it with a very special jacket.
All in all, for Highland’s first Meme Day, we can say it was a success. Although there were not as many as the students who participated in this, it is true that the ones who really made people smile and laugh were the ones who did it. There were many students around the school wearing their souvenirs like in the pictures we have shown you.
In future years, if Meme Day is voted Spirit Week, it will get students involved and be successful!
