Jonah And The Big Fish Story – Jonah and the Very Big Fish is a fun use of language and presents the whole story of Jonah—there’s more to it than just the whale!
Jonah and the Very Big Fish (Best Bible Stories) Illustrated by Tim Thornborough and Jennifer Davison. Good book company, 2019. 24 pages.
Jonah And The Big Fish Story
Jonah’s story is a little different. First, Thornborough puns. Much. Children who are mesmerized by words will enjoy using them in this book. For example, when God sent a storm, “sailors were terrified, frightened and confused, and died of jelly.” Adjective galore!
Prophet Yunus & The Big Fish In The Sea: Quranic Stories Of The Prophets For Kids (prophet Jonah Story)
Second, this Jonah story offers beautiful cross-cultural interpretations. We are pleased to see that more publishers are aiming for more authentic illustrations in Bible storybooks. After all, these stories took place in the Middle East with Middle Eastern (and African) people!
Jonah’s bad attitude, Nineveh’s repentance, and God’s forgiveness are all evident in this retelling. This publication will make a great resource for the church library or Sunday class resource (or, for your own home library).

Betsy is the managing editor at Redeemed Reader. When she reads to you, she uses sticky notes instead of textbooks and even intentionally puts dog ears in library books. Betsy George MacDonald, a fan of heated debates about books and the Oxford comma. She lives in the beautiful Northwest with her husband and their three children. Throughout the Old Testament, God called people to share His message with others. These messengers are called prophets. The story of such a prophet is found in Jonah.
In Old Testament times, the Bible was not what it is today. Although we know how God wants us to live by reading His Word, in the Old Testament, God often told people how to live through the teachings of so-called prophets. God will give them a message to tell others. Name some other Old Testament prophets.
Jonah And The Whale Snack Ideas For Kids
It is important for prophets to follow God’s instructions. Jonah tried to run away and hide from God. Play hide and seek with your child. When it’s over, talk about how much you both want to find each other. God knows where everyone is. Play with thinking about places where we can hide without anyone finding us. After playing for a while, read Psalm 139:1-14. Make gestures to help illustrate what you are reading, for example: Sit down and stand up in sentence one.
Talk about obedience and explain that when God tells us to do something, we do it. Talk about times when obedience is easy (eating candy) and times difficult to obey (cleaning someone’s room).
Jonah eventually followed God’s command, but it wasn’t the first time he obeyed. “Mom told me to clean my room, but you go out to play first, eat snacks first, do you listen?” Create images like It’s always better to obey immediately and with a good attitude.
Play the game in reverse. Jonah did not hesitate to obey, he went in a different direction. Talk about how Jonah repented during the fishing incident. Although Jonah did the opposite of what God told him to do, God gave him a second chance when he repented.
Jonah And The Big Fish Stuffed Doll Set
When the people of Nineveh heard Jonah’s sermon, they repented. Repentance means feeling sorry for what you did wrong, giving it up and doing the opposite. Ask your child to commit a certain crime, such as stealing, and then take it as a sign of repentance (such as working and donating to charity).
When we repent, God forgives our sins and fills our hearts with new life. Write some sins using the whiteboard. Talk about how dirty the whiteboard is. Now let’s put it aside and talk about how Jesus cleanses our hearts from sin. Now write Jesus on the whiteboard and talk about how He will live in the hearts of those who repent and follow Him.
Read Psalm 103:12. Pray and thank God that He will give us a way to forgive. Ask Him to help you to truly repent.
Make a thin plank on the floor using paper or duct tape. Make your child walk the board without falling into the sea. If they fall, shout ‘man overboard’.
Prophet Yunus & The Big Fish In The Sea
Talk about Jonah not walking on a board but being thrown into the sea because of a storm. Remind your children that God was merciful and saved them with the big fish.
A simple way to explain repentance to children is ‘return’. Jonah and the Ninevites wandered away from God, until God called them back.
In this game, the kids have to move away from you. When you say ‘Repent’, they have to quickly turn around. The returnee has finally appeared.
Create a textured bag with different materials. Ask your child to feel the object and explain it. Is it rough, smooth, messy, smooth and so on? Try adding coarse cloth and ash. Explain how all the people in Nineveh wore these clothes.

Each lesson includes a lesson guide, fun and educational worksheets, coloring pages, craft pages, games and activities, worship ideas, and more. God called Jonah to preach in Nineveh, a city that Jonah hated. Jonah didn’t want to go and tried to escape God by boat. But God provided a fish to swallow Jonah when he was thrown into the sea. God protected Jonah among the fish and told him to return to Nineveh. When Jonah preached, the people of Nineveh repented, and God taught Jonah that even our enemies are precious to God. These Bible activities will help the children learn this lesson.
