When painting flames, you want to make sure you follow some basic techniques. This is the key to good fire drawing.
You want the ends of your flame to be narrow and pointed at the top and wider at the bottom.

One flame, like what you see on a candle, looks like a teardrop.
But today we are going to make our flame a little more complicated and beautiful than a candle flame. If you want to learn how to paint a candle, check out this tutorial.
You can still imagine the shape of your flame as a teardrop, but we’ll add some extra curves to it as well. And then we’ll repeat that process with some variations to create our flame pictures.
Start with your basic flame shape. If necessary, you can draw a teardrop first.

Draw two curved shapes. One longer and one shorter. Both should be narrow and pointed at the top. And rounder and wider below.
Draw similar lines next to that flame, but make it a little lower on the paper. You want to keep the same line as your flame, but you can change the curve of the flame.
Repeat this process a third time, again making your flame slightly smaller than the flame next to it. Notice how the overall shapes are still ripped, both for the individual parts of the flame and the overall combined shape.
Do the same with the left side of your original flame, remembering that you don’t need perfect symmetry. However, you want your flames to look balanced. You will notice if he feels uncomfortable looking at her.

Add some small shards of bouncy fire. They can be placed randomly and have no specific shape. However, you want to keep them on the edges and use the same type of curves.
There are many options when it comes to coloring the flames. The two most common types are markers or pencils.
For this tutorial I will show you how to use a bic marker to color your flame pictures. Any branded marker will match your picture. But if you want to blend your colors, make sure you use an alcohol-based marker.
Start by drawing your pencil lines with a marker or black outline marker. This step is optional and depends on your art style.

Next, paint the entire flame yellow. You can fill in only the lower sections if you wish. But my preference is to paint it all so it’s easier to mix the colors.
Using orange, color the top of each part of the flame. You can leave more yellow if you like. Do what feels good to you.
Use red to add color to the edges of your flame painting. Again, you can adjust the amount of red added. Don’t feel like you have to stick to these colors. I’ve seen some very interesting looking flame paintings that also use blue, green or purple. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the colors you use to paint your fire.
As you work, go back to lighter colors to help blend your markers together. If you need more help with this, check out our marker blending guide.
