As long as you include some of these things, your ice cream sundae bar will be a hit with all your guests!
This soon-to-be-loved dessert board starts with a large oval bowl placed in the center of a large charcuterie board or tray. This will hold your ice cream so leave it empty until you are ready to serve.
Crunchy Toppings For Ice Cream
You can either use round trays like mine, square ones, or even long ones. Or if you don’t want to use a tray or board at all, you can always set this on the table as an actual ice cream sundae bar.
Fill small bowls with your favorite ice cream toppings like cookies, mini M&Ms, mini chocolate chips, rainbow chunks, chopped walnuts, cherries, strawberries, chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, strawberry sauce. That goes a long way! I have a full list of ice cream sundae toppings below to give you some ideas!
Then arrange the smaller bowls around the larger oval bowl, trying to break up the different colors of the top like I did with my Halloween dessert board.
If you have toppings that are best served hot or cold, like hot fudge or whipped cream, add bowls as placeholders on the board so you know where they go. Then you can either just add fresh toppings to those bowls at the last minute or carefully swap them out with the filled bowls before serving.
How To Fix Icy Homemade Ice Cream
Place waffle cones and large toppings like candy bars, cookies, or marshmallows directly on the board, filling the space in the bowl.
Add spoons and serving bowls with toppings as needed. I love little serving spoons and scoops like this set to make it look like an ice cream sundae bar you’d find at an ice cream parlor!
Add nugget ice (or any ice) to a large oval bowl and sprinkle 2 teaspoons of salt over the ice to keep the ice cream cold. It can also help to make indentations in the ice using cups or bowls so that when you add the ice cream later, you don’t overfill and the ice gets all over the place.
Place ice cream container in ice and serve immediately. If you’re not going to serve right away, wait to add the ice cream and ice cream until you do!

Ice Cream Recipe
Get different ice cream scoops for each flavor of ice cream. Having an ice cream scoop for each flavor helps keep the different flavors from mixing completely. This is especially important if you have people who don’t want nuts, or they don’t want cookies, or they don’t want chocolate mixed into their vanilla ice cream. If you don’t have more than one, ask nicely to borrow a couple!
Prepare everything on the board ahead of time and add the ice cream at the last minute. Ice will help keep the ice cream cold for a while but depending on the temperature, it will start to melt quickly if you are serving it during the summer months.
Also add empty ice cream cups, ice cream cones, and waffle bowls on or around the ice cream board so people can choose which one they prefer!
Add large cookies that make a great base for cookie sandwiches so people can make ice cream sundaes or ice cream sandwiches!
How To Set Up An Ice Cream Sundae Bar
Choose from a variety of flavors that are universally loved and always include vanilla. I like to include four different flavors that are popular with most people. Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, chocolate chip mint, cookie dough, and birthday cake ice cream are all great options.
If you plan to serve this immediately, put the ice cream away, then no, you can skip the ice. If you plan to set for longer than 15 minutes, ice will help keep the ice cream cold, and I recommend ice. I like nugget ice because it makes the ice cream well rounded but really any ice will do.
There are many great topping options that you can put on an ice cream bar. Some topping ideas include crushed cookies, crushed Oreos, mini chocolate chips, chopped Andes mints, all kinds of chopped nuts, sprinkles (rainbow and chocolate sprinkles are both great), chopped candy bars, mini marshmallows, gummy and fruit candies, fresh fruit, waffles Cone pieces, maraschino cherries and more! You can also make some other non-traditional toppings like sea salt, salted caramel, toffee bits, crumbled bacon, maple syrup, peanut butter and more!
You’ll also want to include a variety of sauces, including hot fudge sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, homemade raspberry sauce, strawberry sauce, and more. And don’t forget the whipped cream and cherries to top it all off!
Toasted Almond Ice Cream Sundae Recipe
Ask yourself who will eat the ice cream and what other desserts (if you are serving). If you’re serving other desserts and the ice cream sundae bar is just an added treat, you can probably get away with a 1/2 cup serving per person because people will probably make a smaller sundae. If you only have an ice cream sundae bar, I recommend 2/3 or 1 cup servings, which is 4-6 servings of each ice cream. If you’re making this for kids, same thing – you can probably go with 1/2 cup portions.
If you prefer to pre-make the ice cream for an ice cream sundae bar, you can totally do that, it just won’t look as pretty! Place ice cream soda and cupcake liners in muffin tins and freeze. Then when you’re ready to serve, move the cupcake liners to the bowl in the center of the ice cream charcuterie board and people can pick their favorites and dump the bowls right into their bowls! Definitely a time saver, just not as pretty!
Place ice cream over ice, ideally nugget ice, that has been sprinkled with salt. Salt helps ice last longer and helps keep ice cream from melting.
