One of the most common and easiest ways to create papier-mâché is to use glue and water as a paste. Several different types of glue work, but most people use wood glue or white glue. creates a structure. The glue also dries transparent, opening up interesting possibilities for translucent projects such as lamps.
In this lesson, you will learn a simple technique to start with paper mache using this simple glue paste method and apply it to different types of objects to create shapes.
How To Make Paper Mache: The Easiest Way To Make Paper Mache
You can use different types of paper to create papier-mâché projects, depending on what kind of effect you want. An important factor in the choice of paper is that the paper should not only be porous and flexible, but should also be quite strong.
For example, regular printer paper does not work well because it is too stiff and too densely packed with fibers. Does not absorb paste well or sculpt smoothly around shapes. With this type of paper, you don’t have enough structural integrity and you end up with bumpy shapes. Magazine paper has a glossy finish, so the same problem occurs. However, papers such as magazines and other decorative papers do not usually work well as structures for papier-mâché projects, but they can be used as the final layer to decorate the project in a process called “decoupage.”
A newspaper is ideal here. Because it is soft, absorbent and quite strong. Cheap, and if you use old newspapers, you can recycle what you can throw away! If you plan to paint on your project, it’s also helpful to lay a blank newspaper on top of the newspaper to create a blank canvas to work on. Other good papers to use are blue shop towels, rice paper, and tissue paper. I will talk more about some of these later.
No matter what kind of paper you are using, you always want to tear the strips rather than cut them. Tearing creates a soft, feathery edge on the paper that blends smoothly into the next strip instead of creating sharp lines when each strip is stacked on top of another.

An efficient way to make strips is to stack about 6-8 layers of paper and tear them all at once.
Most papers, including newspapers, have grain. Tear in the grain to get a clean straight line. Tear it off and you will have a jagged edge like below. Make sure you are tearing the grain.
The width of the strip will vary slightly depending on what you are working with. Thinner strips are needed for detailed areas, and wider strips can be used for larger, less complex areas. 1 inch is a good average width for most projects.
The use of paper mache and strips to cast on objects that will later be removed can be done with either flour or glue paste, although glue paste provides a slightly stronger structure There may be better materials to create this technique.

If the item you are casting will need to be removed later and is not disposable, you will need to prepare it before applying the papier-mâché, especially if you are using an adhesive that sticks more than flour.
A simple way to prepare the items is to wrap them around. Depending on the complexity of the item, you may want to use multiple layers of wrapping. The more layers, the easier it is to peel the paper from small areas and cracks. Tape the ends of the wrap to hold it in place, but it’s okay if the wrap is a little loose around the item.
Another thing to consider is how to retrieve the item later. For example, if you are using a plastic yogurt container and only plan to cover the sides and bottom, it will be easier to remove later without cutting the paper.
However, if you throw an object all the way around or throw it on something with cuts underneath, you will have to cut and remove the paper afterwards. This is good, because you can But before you start, think about how it should be cut .

To make a glue paste, pour white glue or wood glue into a mixing bowl and mix with enough water to make the glue a little less sticky and easier to penetrate the paper. Use a 1:1 ratio. Stir well until the nori and water are mixed.
There are several variations on the technique of applying paper strips to your project. You can experiment and see which method works best for you.
If you’re working with solid armor like the dish I’m using here, it’s a good idea to dip your hands in the paste first and spread the paste over the entire base. Then apply the dry strips on this wet surface, apply more paste at the top of each strip after each addition, overlap the first strip and add more strips. You can also try to dip it and then stick it. You can also dip a few layers of strips at a time, separating the layers a little and dipping them in the mixture so that they are all covered with glue.
Then apply a strip or stack of strips on the surface, cut the strips to match the shape of the foam. Smooth them to create a flat surface. Apply one layer of overlapping stripes to the entire project before adding another layer. Adhesive strips are slightly more slippery than flour strips, so it may take a little trick to apply smoothly. If the multi-layer method doesn’t work, you can always use the single layer

Adding a second layer allows you to make your project stronger by applying these strips vertically to the strip below, switching back and forth on each layer. If you are using stacked strips, you can build up a thick cover of paper pretty quickly. A total of about 4-8 layers of paper (ie, stacking about 2-4 layers) gives a strong structure. However, when I do the last layer, I need to go back to using only one layer so that the outside of the shape is smooth.
After you’ve finished covering your project with strips, you’ll need to let it dry at least overnight before continuing. To avoid this, place it in an area with good air circulation, such as near a fan or near hot air vents. If possible, turn every few hours to dry evenly.
It should dry after about 8-12 hours, but you can test this by simply touching the surface. If it is cold or soft to the touch, it is still wet and needs more time. The more layers you add to your project, the longer it will take to dry. Also, if you are creating intricate shapes, some areas may dry more slowly than others.
