How To Make Easy Cat Ears – Do you have a cat lover in your house? What’s more perfect for your cat lover than a Cat Cat headband?
I was going to spend my time this week working on my kids’ Halloween costumes, but I’ve been procrastinating and working on mostly unproductive things… (I’m really good at that, lol!)
How To Make Easy Cat Ears
So far this week I have managed to make this little cat ear band for my daughter. I’ll be making her little kitty outfit in the next couple of days, but in the meantime she’s very happy just wearing the headband! Let’s just hope we don’t lose it before Halloween!
Braided {kitty} Cat Ears
The headband is really cute and even if I don’t wear it, I might have to make one for myself too…
Print out the cat ear template and cut out the pieces. Place the pattern on the felt and cut out 4 of the larger pieces and 2 of the smaller pieces.
Center the smaller piece of felt in the center of the larger piece. Line up the bottom of the smaller piece above where the larger piece starts to curve. (I didn’t mark it in the photo below, but hopefully you can see what I mean.) Sew the smaller pieces by hand or machine to the larger pieces. I used my machine, but I used a quilt that looks like a hand stitch.
Line up 2 of the larger triangles (one embellished and one not with the embellished side facing in) and sew along the sides as shown below. Leaving about a 1.5 inch opening.

Hand sew the ears into place on the fabric covered headband. (Be sure to start on the back, if you’re like me, your stitches will probably improve as you go.)
For that extra something, I hand sewed some fur to the center of our headband…

If your cat’s ears stand up, it means they are feeling safe or playful. Cats with upright ears tend to be more aggressive than cats with drooping ears, which are usually happier and more relaxed.
When a cat has its ears straight back, it means it is feeling angry or afraid. They may hiss or growl when this happens too!
How To Clean Cat Ears: Step By Step Instructions
When a cat’s ears are flat against its head, it feels threatened or defensive. Some cats will also flatten their ears when petted. So this style, as silly and crazy as it is, was so much fun to make and Bug agreed that it was probably one of her favorite tutorials we did for Halloween. Back in 2008, when we first started blogging, we made cat ears on the Bug using pipe cleaners and we braided the hair around it, bending it into the shape we wanted. Our cat ears with pipe cleaner can be found HERE. Sometimes it is very funny to see the comparison after all these years! 😉
I see Halloween hairstyles popping up everywhere and for some reason I have the hardest time thinking about the upcoming holidays! We have so much going on here at home these days, I can’t deny that the holidays are upon us!
This style doesn’t require pipe cleaners, just some small pins and some ponytail holders. It worked well with her shorter hair too. These could also be considered “devil horns”, but since I’m not into that sort of thing, we stuck with the idea of cute cat ears!
Step 1 – Part the hair from the middle of the forehead back to the crown. Step 2 – Create another part that runs parallel to that part back from the temple to the crown so that you have a long rectangular parted section. Step 3 – Using a ponytail holder create a high ponytail. Step 4 – On the last wrap of the ponytail, don’t pull the hair all the way through the ponytail so that it forms a loop. Step 5 – Dry the hair with water or with hairspray to facilitate the “shape” of the hair Step 6 – Wrap the hair counterclockwise around the base of the ponytail
Cat Ears Using Your Own Hair
You can twist your hair a bit and then start wrapping, or simply wrap your hair so that it is flatter when you wrap it. I’ve done it both ways twice we’ve done this and both work fine. I preferred the flat hair to look a little better because it made the ear look “smoother”.
Step 7 – Continue wrapping the hair until almost covering the top of the loop. Step 8 – Gradually work your way up and back down the ‘ear’ until you’ve almost run out of hair. the bottom of the “ear” so you can tuck them in and hide them. Step 10 – Pin hidden ends under the “ear” with small pins
If you use large needles they will most likely poke out the sides of the cat’s ear, so small ones work best. If you need small pins, you can buy some HERE.
Step 11 – Spray really well with hairspray to make sure things stay in place. Step 12- If you want a more pointed cat ear, simply pull a small piece of the curl that sticks out from the top of the wrapped hair. Step 13 – Repeat all the above steps on the opposite side of the head. FINISHED!
