How To Make An Amazing Gingerbread House – Last year I had a lot of fun building my classic shed, this year I wanted to up the ante and try to build one with a pitched roof. How To Make An Amazing Gingerbread House
This bread is a construction grade chain which means it is really Tough. There is no yeast in it, so it does not puff up or spread. Of course you can eat it, but it is very hard and it is supposed to stay. Since we don’t eat this gingerbread, you can substitute molasses with caro syrup. However, this will lighten the color of the chain.
How To Make An Amazing Gingerbread House
Day 1 – Make your foam core template, bake your gingerbread, pour it into the isomalt windows and let the pieces chill overnight.
Day 2 – Make your dry royal cake, put on the gingerbread walls (let dry for an hour), assemble the gingerbread house details and add the candy.
Print out your paper chain house template and transfer your walls and roof to your foam core. Cut them out and then cut some thin strips in the roof about 1/4″ wide. Don’t cut all the way through the foam (see video).
Glue the walls and roof of the foam core together and set aside to use later to roll out your gingerbread cookie.

Cut out the rest of your paper gingerbread house templates and set aside to use for your dough.
Roll out your gingerbread to about 1/8 inch thick on a sheet of parchment paper cut to the size of your roll.
Place your parchment paper with the dough on the tray and put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Place the rest of the dough in another pan lined with parchment paper and freeze. Icing will only help you keep the cuts cleaner.
Line up your paper templates on the frosted dough so they all line up. Make sure there is about 1/2 inch of space between the slices so they cook evenly. Try to keep large pieces on one pan and small pieces on another pan.

Cut out the pieces (except the curved balcony piece) and trim off the excess dough. While you are making your curved pieces and shaped pieces, cut out the windows and then set the pieces aside.
If you want some decorative rolls on your gingerbread house, you can pour gingerbread dough into silicone molds (make sure they are approved for baking up to 300ºF and are food safe).
Pour the dough into the mold and then freeze for 20 minutes. Carefully remove the dough from the pan and then place it on the pan with the other pieces of gingerbread.
Use an old wire cutter for the shape (or you can cut out a pop hole). Roll the cookie dough onto the metal and then freeze for 20 minutes. Place on paper with other pieces.

When the topping is done (about 45 minutes), carefully remove it from the oven and place the cookie on top of the foam core template and let the cookie cool. I used some heavy containers to keep the cookies from falling.
Before assembling the walls, melt some clear isomalt or some hard candy. Last year I used whimsical planters to create a glass window display.
Place the parts that need isomalt on a silicone mat. Pour the isomalt onto the windows and let cool completely.
Gently remove the cookies from the match and then use your creme brulee torch to light the back of the isomalt to remove the bubbles and texture from the match.

Cover the isomalt with some isomalt sealer like PME glaze or you can put some vegetable oil on the isomalt to prevent it from crystallizing.
To avoid a gray house disaster, you want to coat the walls with STIFF royal icing first and then let it dry for an hour. This ensures that the walls will be strong enough to support the weight of the roof and all the candy you put on top!
Place about 1/2 cup of your dry ice cream into a piping bag. Do not overfill or it will be a difficult pipe.
Glue the front and back pieces of gingerbread to the sides with a generous dollop of royal icing. Use something to cover the sides and hold it in place while it dries.

You can also glue the gingerbread together with melted isomalt, but I don’t recommend this unless you have experience using isomalt, as the drippings can burn.
I assembled my house on a cake board so I can decorate it later and it makes it easy to move around. Don’t glue the housing to the board yet, so you can remove it to insert a battery-operated candle.
Once the walls are dry, you can add some royal icing to the roof. Allow the roof to dry while you assemble the siding and side window.
Now you can glue the concrete and gable to the side of the house. Add your curved front porch to the front of the house and support it with some candy canes. Add your wings to the sides of the windows.

Note the details like the brick texture and the cross pattern on the roof with more royal icing. I used nozzle #2.
Add some battery operated lights to the chain link house and put it on display! This fragile house will not fall or deteriorate. The food is not good because the cookie is hard. If you want to eat gingerbread, I suggest you bake some of my gingerbread cookies for details around the house and you can eat them.
Super strong, great for cutting intricate patterns and won’t spread when baked. This recipe is enough to make one chainsaw using the template included in the blog post
