When I was a kid in school, I always remember using plaster of paris for an art project. I remember loving the way it felt and the way you could mold it over the characters. I also remember that what I did was strong and I kept it for many years. This is something unique to work with!

The first step in making your volcano is to cut a piece of construction paper to wrap around the edges. I haven’t found an easy way to do this, but you can trim it a little and cut it to fit. The worksheet doesn’t have to look good because you hide it.

When you roll the construction paper and cut out a solid for the top. It is best if the paper starts under the top of the bottle or container you are using.

You don’t want the vinegar and baking soda you use to allow the glue to get into the baking paper.

The next step is to cut the plaster cloth into small pieces and tape them. My kids loved using the plaster and put on the craft paper. They are completely immersed in water and pressed on the sides. Then use the finger to clean the plaster.

The more layers you add, the stronger your volcano will be. I added two layers and our DIY volcano is holding up nicely.

When you put the pieces of plaster cloth together, make sure you have a fold at the top to seal where the ‘lava’ comes out.

It is also a good idea to put a board under the foundation. After your volcano erupts and the lava flows out the sides, and your volcano stays in the lava, it will not penetrate the work paper and start breaking your volcano.

When you finish your DIY volcano with the kids, you can add some more details. My kids decided to use some of the plaster fabric to cover the top door. It twisted and left the fabric on the side like lava.

Once you’ve covered your volcano, let it dry. The night is fine, but the plaster dries quickly.

Once completely dry, the fun begins with painting. It’s yours to paint your volcano. Children will want to find their own volcano when they have time.

Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of red DIY volcanoes from kids. Adding more detail with paint can make a big difference to the overall look of your volcano.

We used red, orange and yellow lines for the lava. We applied the paint to the new fabric pieces we added to cover the sides.

Then we added black for the rest of the volcano and finished with a dark brown underneath and my other daughter added some green for the grass.
