One thing led to another (read: “pint”) and I soon declared I needed a hat. Turns out it was easily accomplished, so much so that I thought I’d document it and share my own pattern with you. So let’s do…

Colonial Tricorn Hat For Kids

First, a big thanks to SPWA for letting me use his baseball cap design as the crown for our hat (my initial attempts were really poor, starting from a lumpy beret to a stunted witches top, then, thanks, SPWA!) .

Second, I’ve made several of these hats now (don’t laugh, you can too) using a variety of materials and I can honestly confirm that paper is your easiest and fastest choice. In fact, a few brown grocery bags, carefully cut and spread, do the trick. However, for these tutorials I will show you how to make a felt hat. As an aside I will note any specific paper suggestions.

As mentioned before, I tried paper grocery bags, poster board, heavy felt and thin sheets of foam crafting: the result? Glue with paper or heavy felt (from a bolt, not a small, 12-inch, floppy craft sheet – there’s something called “stiff felt” that I’ve yet to try).

Paper makers may want some kind of tape to hold temporarily while your glue dries – use tape wherever the instructions mention hanging.

Tip: Protect this work! You’ll be using glue, a substance known to hide where it shouldn’t until it dries, at which point your mom/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend/roommate will always discover it and scream. How you ruined the table. So take a few minutes to smooth some newspaper over your entire work surface. Keep a damp paper towel handy to wipe up small drips.

Tip: Do your research! How these hats looked and were worn varied greatly based on class and need, so you might want to Google it to decide what colors, trims, and style options for “pinted hat” (also try “tricorn”) to your taste, but don’t be limited by what you see, they sure weren’t.

Tip: Fewer stitches are better! These patterns are designed to fit on US letter paper (8.5 x 11 inches), but that doesn’t mean you have to cut them that way. In fact, you need as few stitches as possible. So if your fabric or paper is large enough to make the brim of the hat by following the pattern four times to create a single, full circle like this one (below), do it!

Similarly, if you can muster it, the ideal cap crown would be a single piece that looks like this:

The gray areas in the image above are your folding tabs: note that the triangular top of each panel will be folded! These are all pressed under the hexagonal “nut” (there is only one “nut” on the right panel).

In this step you will cut the crown “bits”, attach them to the round cap, check for fit and finally glue your crown.

I won’t lie: this is where I made all my mistakes. You’re making a round half-dome from a flat sheet – this requires careful folding, so it’s a good idea to apply some dry glue first. Technically speaking, you are building an octagonal dome, by folding 8 “gors” — triangular panels. When folded carefully, they form a surprisingly smooth dome.

Now that you’ve already traced the pattern on your material, it’s time to carefully cut along the solid lines – not the dots, these are your folding guides.

Tip: Cut between the tabs: remember to cut each side of your crown: the bottom tab should separate from the edge of the adjacent panel (top).

Tip: Fold over to avoid a very noticeable peak! The only pro tip I can offer (and that’s only because I completely messed it up the first time – see photo later in this post) is to bend the patient and side panels to make the crown of the hat. they should overlap, with each panel overlapping the top of its neighbors ever so slightly. The top two layers are the most important, they will decide whether it looks round like an acorn cap or pointed-pyramidal like the bottom of an acorn (again, see the photo documenting my flub).

Tip: Use a shape: If you have a hat or ball of the right size, try placing your pieces on it.

Tip: Try it! Try it on, making the necessary adjustments before committing to the shape and size.

Once you’re happy with the shape of your pinned crown, remove each pin, gluing both the tab surface and the back of the panel, pressing them firmly and loosely before moving on to the next pin.

Now that you’ve gone all the way to the crown, you need to move it aside until the glue starts to set. It will take about half an hour depending on your glue and the weather.

Note: Inner Head Opening Size: If you have made any changes to the size of your crown, you will need to adjust the size of the inner berm head opening (outer size does not require any changes).

If you can cut a seamless edge from one piece of material – congratulations – less sticking for you!

If you need to glue your border, dry it first, tape or hang it, make sure it’s round, adjust it and once it’s perfectly straight and rounded, glue each section and set aside to dry.

Tip: Trim the hem. (Optional) If you plan to add some gold or silver trim around the brim of your hat, before attaching the crown would be a good time to do so. Attach the trim, then glue and replace the pins. When dry, place some weight magazines on top.

Tip: Add more tabs. If the base of your crown is very round, and with felt it should be, you can cut extra tabs on the inside edge tabs (see photo below). Doubling the number of edge tabs from 8 to 16 will allow us to follow a much smoother, natural curve.

In this step, you attach the finished crown to the edges, first with pins (following the star pattern) and then with glue.

Now that the crown and rim glue joint has dried, you will simply place the crown in the center of the rim and yes, carefully attach the rim tabs inside the crown. The problem to look for is “puckering” or wrinkling where you’ve stretched or stretched the fabric.

(You’ll notice in the photo above that I have a problem with the shape – it looks like a melting Hershey’s kiss – which could have been avoided if I had attached it earlier. I didn’t and I paid the price; I had to separate them all from the panels, from the second fold to the top, then pin and glue again. Lesson learned! Fixed crown to dry.)

Note: Cut out the faces! Make sure the gold trim is facing down. Why? Note that the edge of the final rolled cap is curled. The bottom of the edges will be the most visible – so you want to cut from the bottom.

(OK, confession: I did it upside down the first time again, but luckily this time I just attached it – no glue – and got my gaff in time to flip it upside down and attach it again. seen)

Tip: alternate panels when attaching. How to tighten a wheel nut when changing a car tire is actually my dad’s advice, but it applies here too. Instead of hooking one panel, then its neighbor, and so on, moving panel by panel around the hat, you’ll instead use a star pattern, jumping over the hat each time. So attach the panel with a fist, check the alignment and correct any gathering problems, then jump directly to the opposite side and attach it (see diagram) and so on, until all 8 panels overlap the edge and the edge should not be smooth. and flat—wrinkle-free—on your desk.
