How To Make A Tricorn Hat Out Of Construction Paper – This “triangle hat” (“triangle”, triangle,  triangle or colonial hat) is a fun project that you can do right now, it takes about half an hour of your time and some essential materials (scissors, glue and paper). However, if you prefer a more permanent outfit—say, for Halloween, a school play, or more memorable beach photos—a five-dollar bill and a trip to the hobby or fabric store will have your custom cover.

Part of the fun of creating smaller sites for friends is the opportunity to dive into new, often unconventional worlds, and in the case of my friend Ben Tripp’s site for young adult novels, The Casual Thief would be one of those worlds. 19th century England, which I knew nothing about. As it turned out, I ended up in the pub where Ben was learning about the three-brimmed hat (he’s adamant that it’s historically accurate, I use the rather archaic “three-brimmed hat” compared to the more common modern name: “three”.-horns”).

First of all, thanks to SPWA for letting us use their baseball cap design on the brim of our triangular hat (my first few attempts were very weak, from a lumpy hat to a witch peak, so thank you SPWA!) .

Second, I’ve now made a few of these hats (don’t laugh, you can do it too) using different materials, and I can honestly confirm that paper is your easiest and fastest option. In fact, a couple of brown grocery store bags, neatly cut and placed, work great. However, for these instructions I will show you how to make a felt hat. I’ll ignore the tips on the special paper.

As just mentioned, I experimented with paper grocery bags, poster board, heavy felt and thin foam sheets – result? stick with paper or thick felt (from a screw, not from flexible 12″ craft sheets – there’s something called “stiff felt” that I haven’t tried yet).

Papermakers may have tape on hand to hold temporarily while your glue dries; use tape where the instructions mention securing.

Tip: Protect this desktop! You’re going to use glue, you know a substance that likes to hide where it shouldn’t be until it dries, and then your mom/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend/roommate will definitely find out and scream about how you ruined the table. . So take a few minutes to smooth the newspaper over the entire work surface. Keep a damp paper towel handy to wipe up small drips.

Tip: Do your research! There are huge variations in how these hats looked and were worn depending on class and need, so you’ll also want to Google images of “tricorn hat” (try “tricornio” as well) to decide which color, finish, and shape options suit you. You have your imagination, but don’t be limited by what you see, they certainly weren’t.

I have prepared models in four sizes (adult men, medium, adult women, children and children). If you want a more custom and detailed version and want to know how to adjust your printer output in percentages, start with the adult template and resize accordingly. That’s 7.6 inches

Tip: Fewer points are better! these patterns were designed to fit on US Letter (8.5″ x 11″) paper, but that doesn’t mean you have to cut them that way. In fact, you want as few seams as possible. So if your fabric or paper is big enough, make the brim of the hat by going around the pattern four times to make a single full circle like this (below), do it!

Likewise, if tailored, the crown of a hat would be perfect for a sturdy piece that looks good:

The gray areas in the image above are your folding tiles – note that the triangular tip of each panel will be folded! Everything breaks down under the “nut” (there is only one “nut” in the right panel).

In this step, cut the “cuts” of the crown, attach it to the round cap, check the fit and finally glue the crown.

I’m not going to lie: I’ve made all my mistakes here. You are forming a rounded half-dome from a flat sheet; it needs to be folded very carefully, so it’s a good idea to start with a dry glue. Technically speaking, you form an octagonal dome by folding 8 “humps” – triangular panels. Carefully folded, they form a surprisingly smooth dome.

If you’ve already traced the pattern onto the material, now it’s time to carefully cut along solid lines, not dotted lines, these are your fold guides.

Tip: Cut the tiles: Make sure you go through each edge of your crown: the bottom tile should be cut separately from the edge of the next panel (gap).

Tip: overlap too much to avoid a sharp peak! The only advice I can give (and that’s only because I’ve made a complete mess of it the first time – see photo later in this post) is that forming the crown of the hat requires patiently folding and overlapping the side panels, each with a point. the panel slightly overlaps the tip of its neighbors. The top two folds are the most important, they will determine whether the acorn cap will be round or pyramid shaped like the bottom of an acorn (again, see the photo documenting my mistake).

Tip: Use a shape: If you have a hat or ball of the right size, try placing your shapes on it.

Tip: Try it! Before choosing a shape and size, try it on, make the necessary adjustments.

When you’re happy with the shape of the attached wreath, go back around, remove each of the guides, glue the tile surface and the back of the panel together, pressing them firmly together and taping tightly before moving on to the next post.

Now that you’ve wrapped the wreath, set it aside until the glue starts to set. Depending on your glue and the weather, it will take about half an hour.

Note: Inner Head Hole Size: If you have made any adjustments to the size of the crown, you will need to adjust the inner head hole size (outer size should not change).

If you were able to cut the edge from a solid, seamless material – congratulations – you have less sticking!

If you need to glue the edge, let the glue dry first, tape or clip it, check it’s round, adjust, and when it’s perfectly accurate and round, glue each section and leave to dry.

Tip: Apply Trim to Brim. (optional) If you plan to add some gold or silver trim to the brim of the hat, now is the time to do so before attaching the crown. Cut the clip, then glue and replace the pins. Place some weighted magazines on top while it dries.

Tip: Add more tabs. If the base of your wreath is very round, and with the felt it should be, you can cut extra on the inside edges of the edges (see image below). By doubling the number of tiles on our edges from 8 to 16, we can follow a much smoother and more natural curve.

In this step, you attach the finished wreath to the field, first with pins (making a star pattern), then by gluing.

Now that the glue joints of the crown and rim have dried, you simply place the crown in the center of the rims and, yes, carefully secure the rim tabs to the rim. One problem to watch out for is “creasing” or wrinkling where you’ve pulled or stretched the fabric.

(You’ll notice in the photo above that I have a problem with the shape – it looks like a melting hershey’s kiss – which could have been avoided if I had fixed it first. I didn’t and I paid the price; I had to split all the panels, from the second fold to the end, then pin and glue again. Lesson learned! Crown drying fixed below)

Note: Cut face down! Make sure the gold edge is facing down. why? Remember that the last triangular hat has a rounded edge; the bottom of the edges will be the most visible, so you need to finish underneath.

(Okay, I’ll admit it: the first time I flipped it upside down again, but luckily this time I nailed it – no glue – and noticed just in time to flip my gaffe upside down and reattach it)

Tip: Alternate the panels when docking. This is actually my dad’s advice on how to tighten wheel nuts when changing a car tire, but it applies here. Instead of anchoring a panel, its neighbor, etc., moving panel by panel around the hat, you’ll use a star pattern, jumping over the hat each time. So pin your panel in a fist, check the alignment and correct any fold issues, then jump straight to the opposite side and pin (see diagram) and pin the 8 panels to the edge until the edge is smooth and flat. – no wrinkles – on the desktop.

Tip: Check out the interior. I glued and pinned it on the outside – I can see the folds. With that done, I turned the cap over and secured it
