“I wondered what it would change to take him off the screen and into the real world,” says John “It didn’t occur to me to model him in clay or sculpt him, and I certainly wasn’t going to start casting. I think of myself as a painter and thought of this experiment as one that addressed the thoughts I had about painting.”
“It had nothing to do with any thoughts about sculpture because I had none,” he adds. “Perhaps for this reason he took it for granted that he would be folded out of paper or cardboard, and that he was more a surface than a volume, more a shaped canvas than anything else. He was always, and more importantly, somewhat flat.”
John continued: “So, I set about cutting and scoring and gluing cards until I had him standing on the table. I was amazed at the result. He occupied the original space and as for my first question, what would change? It was mine. There seemed to be a lot more. At least the little guy opened up some possibilities that in the years since I’ve begun to explore.”
Forms begin life on the computer—much like you’d expect from 3D modeling software for video game design. “For all the low-tech processing that goes into their design, that link remains obvious and important in the context of how they’re made,” adds John. “They combine simple but time-consuming manual techniques with high-tech design processes resulting in what I’ve come to think of as a kind of modern primitive.”

In addition to sculptures, John also creates narrative paintings with themes based on modern life. In his series The Office, for example, we see people struggling to survive in the corporate world. Here again you can see the influence of the gaming industry.
– The work progresses with some urgency as if it were a hunt, he says. “Meanings emerge gently through blending; connect and separate themselves as formats change. I exercise little control but observe and I draw or construct what I observe. Slide the stack of sheets over your face. Press down as hard as possible. Do this carefully so as not to puncture the foil. Make sure the general outline of your face is printed: nose, lips, corners of eyes and cheekbones. Cut the tissue paper into strips and stick the tissue strips on the face with glue.
Now cut pieces of newspaper and cover the face with glue. Let stand for a few hours (1 day if necessary).

At this point you need to use paper clay. Paper clay is an inexpensive, easily sculptable material made from toilet paper. To make the clay you need strips of toilet paper, the same amount of PVA glue (white school glue) and water. Soak thin pieces of white tissue paper in water until mushy. Then lift the paper and squeeze out as much water as possible. Add equal amounts of PVA glue (white school glue) and water and mix the pulp well. If you still see any lumps, use a fork or your fingers to break them up (with the mixer off!) and then mix some more. Your paper clay is now ready to use. It will look a bit like cookie dough – but don’t eat it!
Mix equal amounts of glue and water in a bowl. Soak gauze (you can use gauze) in the mixture.
Now cover the mask with 2/3 layer of wet gauze. Just roll the fabric and make some flower shapes. Sharpen the facial features with your fingers or other shaping tools. Here I added some clay to the eye area as needed for the shape of the nose and lips and the shape of the eyes using a small knife.
Here glue, water mixer will act as fabric hardener. After drying, cut off the excess paper from the back.

Now take a hardboard and cover it with cardboard paper. Add your sculpture with glue..
