How To Make A Number 2 Cake – Guess? Today’s post has 2, yes 2! Cakes that appear in it. I had a client who approached me and asked if I could make two cakes for each of her boyfriend’s birthdays. They had a Hot Wheels themed birthday party together. One turned 2 and the other turned 5. I was more than ready to make these cupcakes!
These Hot Wheels cakes were super fun to make! One of the songs was Vanilla Yellow Cake and the other was Chocolate Cake. Both were scooped into the path provided and then whipped with vanilla cream. The tops were covered in fondant to make the “road” and the sides were decorated with fondant squares to mimic the checkered flag. The sides were lightened with “grass” buttercream.

I put the Hot Wheels logo on top of the road with Royal Icing and then wrote each boy’s name. Each track has a “start” and a “finish”. Then real Hot Wheels cars were placed on top – they race to the finish line! I liked this touch, because then the birthday boy has a new toy!

Oh yes! These two cakes also include cupcakes! These were simple – chocolate and vanilla like the cakes, then drizzled in Hot Wheels colors and topped with rings that doubled as party favors.
These cakes were fun and I heard they were a hit at the party. I found it challenging to use different elements on these cakes: carving, buttercream, fondant and royal icing. They are all very different to work with and give different results, it was fun to see them work together in one cake!

We had to be able to travel with it, so we couldn’t really do a tiered cake for fear of it tipping over during travel.
This cake number two is pretty easy to shape and travels really well. You can easily decorate with your favorite fruit… we used saskatoons, raspberries, tangerines and strawberries. Be sure to dry the fruit before placing on top of the cake so it doesn’t bleed into the frosting.

Prepare the cake according to the recipe instructions. Bake the cake in a 9-inch round pan and a 9-inch square pan. Leave to cool.
Use an approximately 2 1/2-inch round cutter to cut out the center of the round cake. Cut 1/4 of the round cake and turn the piece to the right. Cut a piece of the square cake to fit the bottom of the circles. (See photo for clarification!) I cut an extra small piece to make the base of both a little longer. This is not always necessary – use common sense.
Prepare the frosting – put 2 cups of heavy cream and 1 kg of vanilla pudding in a large bowl. Beat with a whisk until stiff enough to spread. Spread over the cake to cover.
When you run out, just whip up the remaining 2 cups of heavy cream and the box of vanilla pudding. Continue to spread or pipe the icing as desired.

I sliced the strawberries pretty thin so I could add them to the sides. If you cut them thicker, they may fall because they are too heavy.
