We model rocks with our flour salt. Salt dough is easy to make and can be dried if you want to keep it for science work only.

Mix the best you can with a spoon, but you may need to just dig in with your hands. That’s what I did. This is a hard dough so you can shape it and make it stand around the bottles to fill your stone. You may need to add a little more water depending on your condition. I added 1/4-1/3 cup more after mixing.

You may notice the color gray in our time. We tried changing our flour to some dark brown, but it would take up the whole bottle, so we gave up!

You need a bottle in the middle. You can use a soda bottle, a water bottle or a glass bottle as we used them. Anything you have on hand with a small opening at the top should work just fine!

Mix red food coloring, water, and dish soap together. We used about 2 cups of water, but you only need to fill your bottle about 3/4 of the way full.

To make the actual volcano shape, I cut the middle of a plastic bottle and closed both ends and secured it with masking tape. To give the volcano more of a pyramid / mountain shape I roll the newspaper into a tube shape and wrap it in the bottom of a plastic bottle and secure it all with masking tape.

Time to get dirty: Apply Paper Mache to our stone using a small piece of newspaper soaked in distilled water. We also wrapped a small piece of newspaper in the open bottle but made sure there was enough room to add baking soda and vinegar later.

While we wait for the paint to dry, we have a quick project to see how much baking soda and vinegar will be needed for a homemade volcano. To give you an idea, we used 4 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar mixed with some red and yellow food coloring.
