Angels, though seen as spiritual rather than material, are depicted as human beings with wings. But wings aren’t just appendages that grow from the shoulder blades, they’re specialized arms. So angels usually have three pairs of limbs!
So, how to draw real angel wings? You need to dive a little into the body of people and birds, not only to combine the bones and visual muscles, but also to keep in mind their functions. So in this tutorial I will show you not only how to draw wings or angel wings, but also how to draw real angels.

Of course, if you just want to draw angel wings, you can safely skip the anatomy section – the step-by-step instructions will still be easy to follow!
Let’s start with human anatomy, since you are already familiar with it. The arm is attached to a structure called the pectoral girdle – shoulder blades and clavicles. This gives the arm a wide range of motion. A large muscle, called the pectoralis, powers the shoulders – it’s attached to the sternum.
Is everything clean? Let’s look at the bird now. Different birds have a girdle, although it’s a bit more complicated: the clavicles are integrated into a structure called a furcula (or wing bone) that works like a spring, and their function is performed by a special bone called the coracoid (not in humans). Because birds need more power in their arms than humans, their shoulders are powered by large pectoral muscles that connect to a large sternum.
As you can see, the wings are not just bones – they are a complex structure of wrist, arm and pectoral muscles. The part that starts at the shoulder is the most visible, but a truly useful wing needs more than this.

You may notice two problems here. One, we have to put two pairs of limbs with shoulder blades and clavicles separated in the chest (if each pair is to move separately). Second, the sternum must be large, with room for large wings and smaller shoulder pectorals. So what do we do?
There are many ways to solve these problems, each equally fantastic. It is not possible or useful to have two pairs of limbs close together, so whatever solution we come up with will only be a physical manifestation of the impossible. But it’s still better than just gluing wings to the back!
This is my idea: the sternum is enlarged, with two layers of pectorals attached to it. Human clavicles can reach lower and bend more to make room for the coracoid on the wing. Birds’ clavicles are removed – not all flying birds have them, so we can assume they are not necessary for flight. The wing muscles are also very large, covering the front of the body.
Additional shoulder blades are placed between humans, fortunately the scapula of birds is narrow and can be bent to fit this arrangement. The wings start behind the original shoulders, slightly above them.

In this configuration, each pair of arms can move separately, and the whole structure looks secure – although in reality this is not enough for powered flight!
If you want to draw an angel or just a man with wings, you need to modify their chest first. It’s not necessary, of course, but it will add realism. As a model I used a picture of a shirtless, muscular man. He looks perfect for this purpose!
First, I added an artificial bone inside the chest, with the coracoids landing somewhere behind the shoulder muscles. I tried to keep the sternum big but not stupid (although that would be safer!).
After I converted the image to line art, the new anatomy was combined with the original model.

Draw the basic strokes of the wings. Forget the anatomy first – just draw a movie of what the wing should look like in the end.
Add “fingers”. It is slightly bent in the middle, so you can use it to create the pose you want.
Draw a line that separates the main hair from the secondary hair. It should be shorter than the forearm.

There are usually ten main feathers. Mark the “toes” to make room for each. Make the mark spread in half.
Draw a curve that will form the basic shape of the primary layer. It should be like part of a circle, suddenly facing the wrist.
Draw three other principals – they can go outside the curve, similar to the longest principal.
Draw the second level. No need to count them – just draw them in a similar rhythm until you fill the area. No need to draw them in the front view though – they’re behind the folded primary here.

Explain the first half of the process. The inner part of the curve should be round and the outer part narrower. This is how you create the characteristic pinhole feathers.
Both primary and secondary are shrouded in greater secrecy. They should cover the shafts of the feathers. Plan their length first. Remember that the cover is placed separately both front and back!
There are lesser secrets that cover the greater secrets. Draw them the same way, except this time avoid the back of the primary layer.
In addition, there is a structure called the alula – a bundle of fibers attached to the thumb. It covers the wings on the back, but some of it is also visible on the front, when the toe is “open”.

The space between the flight feathers and the body is filled with scapulars (at the back) and tertials (in front).
The wings, when folded, are located under the mantle – feathers that are part of the bird’s body. You can leave this out if you want to show off those amazing back muscles, but they can help give the wings a full look.
The guide line is complete – it’s time for the actual drawing! We will do this in the opposite order of how we draw the structure. First, draw a coat and a small cape. Keep them soft! There is no need to draw feathers separately, as they are usually not visible.
Draw less secrets. This is where you want to start paying attention to the order of the feathers. On the back, start drawing from the elbow, and the front from the finger.

Finally, nice primaries and secondaries. You can draw a relatively thick rashi in them, but it should thin out towards the top.
Once done, you can place the feathers. Just be careful: if the lines are too strong, they look too thick and stiff (unless it’s the style you want, in which case, go for it!).
