1. We will start with an exercise in SEEING and we will work with loose lines to get practical, using the positive and negative spaces as a guide only. Use a pen so you can’t erase the line.
2. On the index card, use a ruler to draw a series of horizontal and vertical lines. Make the box slightly more upright [think portrait rather than landscape]. My grid is about 1/2″ wide, but that’s a guess. They don’t measure!
3. Now try to imagine the boxes as “homes” for your block letters! We’re going to turn those boxes into letters [loosely, just to get the idea], the spaces around them. Letters. In other words, the opposite of nature. This is called negative space. If you do this, all that is left in the box is the letter. If you can’t see the text you’re working on, try holding or moving the paper away from you. Imagine your text as a shape you can hold – cookie dough or wood planks!
4. In my video, I am creating English subtitles. Your challenge is to work through uppercase A-Z and lowercase a-z. Remember that some letters like O|o or Z|z or C|c are the same uppercase as lowercase, just in different sizes. And some are completely different, like A|a and H|h and I|i. I am creating a sans serif block font [these fonts have no serifs].

2. On the index card, as instructed in the video [using a pen], draw each capital letter of the alphabet as a block letter. Use a pen so you can’t erase the line.
3. If the letter gives you trouble, just continue through the letter and then start over. Gradually some characters will become easier and drawing will feel more natural. Continue through the alphabet. The hardest for me when I was learning – letters G, Q, S and lowercase __.
5. You can color the letters too! Here are the letters a-b-c painted with ink and a small brush. It takes time to brush out and so it will be difficult to keep the flow of ink or paint at first, but keep practicing!

OK, so in the image above, I’ve given 3 different examples of how to shade letters. Whatever you do, be consistent. If all the shadows are on the sides of the letters, make sure all the letters have shadows on the sides. If all the shadows are under one letter, make sure all letters show it. In any case, the letters will look 3-dimensional if the shading is consistent.
For the third row, the light will come from above and to the right….just like the top row, however, the light is slightly higher and to the right.
Following these letters, add shadows to the left and bottom of each border. This will give a real 3D look.
This is more complicated than the previous two examples. As you can see from the ‘F’ example above. You need to rotate the shadow letters down and at right angles. The first shadow in the example is if the letter is at an angle and therefore the shadow is at a slight angle, then the second letter in each example. Another example of each letter is a letter on a table or flat surface. Use each of the examples provided to help you draw these shadows. Once you’ve drawn these shadows, try using them with your own 3D characters. Please let me know if you want a full tutorial on this shading example.

To draw 3D letters, start by drawing bold letters in the middle of your paper using a pencil. Next, mark an “X” in the upper left or right corner of the paper. Next, draw a line from the edge of your letter to the “X” mark and don’t forget to draw a line to the far corner of your letter as well. After you draw the lines, use them as a guide to create the thickness of each letter. Finally, erase the pencil line and outline the final drawing in black pen or marker to make it stand out.
