How To Draw Bat Wings – Welcome to my “How to draw wings” tutorial. Let’s start with a look at some basic birds and bats. These are probably the two most common wings. They can be found in various real and mythical creatures, as well as fantasy characters. These basic steps should be considered when you draw wings on anything. Without good basic structure, your drawings will not be as convincing as they could be. Remember that under each wing, whether it is feathered or covered with fur, is meat and bones. Start from the inside and work your way out. more
Before you start drawing wings on a creature, you need to figure out how they will attach. For birds or bats, wings are their front parts instead of legs or arms. For angels, demons, or other beings with wings next to their front bodies, the thinking is pretty much the same. Attach the wings in the shoulder area (more specifically the shoulder blade). This will always give your creature a more natural look, even if this type of anatomy does not exist in nature, and even if you use a cartoon style. more

However, the location of the wings is not always limited to the shoulder blades. Depending on the theme, you can place wings *almost* anywhere, as long as it makes sense. A character can wear wings on their helmet or armor. They may also have wings that grow from different parts of the body. Marvel’s Namor has wings on his ankles. Other characters grow wings from their pelvises. The trick is to understand the basic anatomy of the bones and find a plausible attachment point in the human or animal body. more
Cute Bat Drawing
Insect wings are slightly different from bird or bat wings. Do some research. Look at the pictures. Go outside and look at real live things. Once you start to really understand how the different types of wings work, you will be able to visualize the anatomy in your mind and it will be much easier to draw. more
Another thing you might want to try is designing wings with atypical construction and materials, such as plants, coral or rock. It might not make sense with standard physics, but with a little imagination, I suppose anything is possible 😉 Here I have drawn examples of stone/crystal wings, spider webs and plant wings. more
Now let’s take a closer look at building the wings. We will start with feathered bird wings. To begin, draw the three anatomical parts of the front of the bird. “Draw a chicken wing!” You know, like fried chicken. That’s literally what this is. So think about food when you draw bird wings. It is actually easier to see this than to work from anatomical diagrams. more
Then we want to place three rows where the feathers will come. I used to only draw the cartoon wings with cloud-like feathers, so learning to place the feathers properly was a challenge for me. The feathers closer to the bone are shorter, and those further away are longer and wider. Small, medium, large. Note how the curve of the “finger” continues to the tip of the upper feather. From this line, each row of feathers bends towards the “armpit” area. The red guide line shows the direction our pen will take. Technically, each feather is at a different angle, and they all come from attachment points on the “arm”. Think of a Japanese folding fan. more
Newbie Tries To Draw Bat Wings
Lightly erase the underlying drawing or use an overlay to draw the finished art. This is going to be a bit of a fantasy wing, so we’ll start detailing our friend’s juicy appendages, here. I used repetition of shape in different places to mimic a feather pattern. more
Now the first feathered one. This bundle is made of small feathers, wrapped in a pouf, soft… I forgot the word I was going to use. *shakes head* Anyway, instead of drawing all the feathers, we’ll simplify by just drawing the outer edge for now. Make sure these small shapes overlap each other. They should be less orderly than the larger feathers that follow. Of course, all birds have different feathers, so be sure to use reference material when drawing a specific bird. more
Use simple strokes to draw the tips in the middle row of feathers. They remind me of the blade of a butter knife. Consider the Japanese folding fan (wooden). Draw long curves from the inside of the wing outwards to define the separation between the feathers. It is not necessary to draw every feather perfectly. This would make the drawing very flat. For the third row of feathers divide the edges with a few scraps. This will add texture to the drawing. more
For the last step, use short lines to indicate the fibers of some of the feathers. Again, it is not necessary to draw each one. Just explain it. Align the smallest row with a few extra feathers here and there. Add more scratches and strokes to the fleshy part, and this feathered wing is complete! more

Now let’s start drawing some bat wings. They can also be dragon wings if desired. The basic concept is that bats’ wings are large hands, with long, thin fingers and scaly skin in between. To start, we want to basically draw an arm. I’ve added a separate section here, but you can keep in mind that when we attach that shoulder blade to something… Next we draw three basic hand shapes. Look at your hand. There is a bump on the thumb, on the other side, and then there is the “rest”. I try to simplify if I can 🙂 The hand is a bit small here, but fingers are everything. Draw the “thumb” as a hook-like shape upwards. Then draw the first digit of each “finger”. In a realistic bat drawing, this would be the longest figure, but we’re going to take some creative license here. more
Then draw the remaining digits of the “finger”. Each finger comes to a point at the end. These will be clawed later as we add details. Notice how the first finger is much shorter than the rest. Interesting…
This is the fun part where the wing finally takes shape. After adding some detail to the arm, use large curves to draw the skin between each finger. Leave some space at the end of each finger for the claws.
Here we can add any optional details we want. I really wanted to add some veins to the skin so that was the first thing I did. In general, you want to remember to add straight folds where the skin folds (towards the palm) and where it stretches (towards the claws). Add small tears and scratches to the wings to make them scarier. Finish by drawing wrinkles and spots on the arm, and feel free to draw some stray hairs (for a mammal) or scales (for a reptile). more

Our final wing for this tutorial will be a fantasy wing with insectoid features. The basic shape will resemble the early bird wing. First we need to draw the structure of the “arm”.
Then add a paddle-shaped row. These will actually be armor plates, but they will imitate the appearance of feathers.
Here we will draw the blades that make the wing itself. We want these to look like feathers now, but they will transform as we add details.
To enlarge the “arm”, first draw some armor plates stacked at the “elbow” “elbow”. Then draw curved lines from the shape to the base. Use overlapping folds and creases to add dimension to this shape.

Draw protected “feathers” and draw decorative swirls to break up gaps in the drawing. These designs can be confused with arm wrinkles.
Now we will define the shape “finger”. I wanted this part to feel more fleshed out and organic compared to the rest of the arm armor. This isn’t much more than a mess of creases and folds, but notice how the tip hooks inward. This will hold the main blade of the wing for stability in flight. more
Finally, we outline the individual blades of the wing and add details within each of them. Starting with the largest leaf, break the shape with long curves. Then cut across the grain to make round and rectangular “cells”. Although we will not detail all the cells, this will make our sheet look like a dragonfly wing. It is important to repeat these details as closely as possible from sheet to sheet. The repetition of forms will look great. If each sheet has different details, the drawing will be confused
