Hello everyone! Despite what some may say, you can draw a good-looking manga style and still have all the correct anatomy for each topic. Let me show you by creating an anatomically correct manga cat.
Cats are probably one of the most wrongly drawn animals, if not more, and for good reason! We’ll get to why this is, but for now, know that cat anatomy is unique and complex.
Manga is a Japanese cartoon art. It’s very different from American comics because the angles are usually sharper and the features are bigger. Manga is also generally “prettier” than, but for some reason, not as “cozy” as other forms of cartoons. You don’t have to be Japanese to draw like this, because remember: just because something comes from it doesn’t mean it has to stay there.
The one that started the manga is Mizu no Akira of the deviant art. I started a manga a few years ago trying to copy its style, but when I got the hang of it a bit I decided to change it up a bit and create my own style, but you can see it is still very similar to the original. version.

Cats don’t have breasts! Look at the picture of a cat’s skeleton and compare it to the skeleton of an animal with a chest (like a dog). You will notice that the cat’s chest tilts up and stops between the arms near the middle. For animals that have a chest, the chest is round and wide, not thin and sloping. It will probably go beyond the shoulders as well. All the cat “cage” is just the arms that are attached. This special arrangement, combined with the absence of a collarbone, allows the cat to fit into tight spaces where other animals of the same size cannot pass.
Study the cat anatomy sheet above. This should help you better understand how cats are built (and how not), but if you still don’t understand how things work, don’t hesitate to ask.
Tip: If you have a cat, what are you waiting for? Let’s study him/her! Nothing helps you understand anatomy better than studying living objects! Even if you don’t have a cat, you probably know someone who does. Next time you visit him, pay attention to the cat.
Note: The reason the photo on the anatomy sheet above looks a little sketchy is because I drew it with a pen on paper and copied it onto the sheet.

In manga, mood is everything. As Leslie Harrison taught me, you can send a painter or drawing emotions. Of course, he is a pastel artist, not a manga artist; so you can imagine the way to show emotions in real images and manga, anime or cartoon completely different. Study the worksheet above to learn some of the best ways to express and dramatize your art.
Note: The reason why the pictures on the expression sheet above look a bit sketchy is because I drew them with a pen on paper and copied them onto the sheet.
Background is an important part of a good manga. Now we don’t want our pictures floating in space, do we? I know you don’t. To create a good background, we need to know what mood we will draw (that’s why emotional expressions appear first). Once you’ve set the mood, you’ll want to choose a background that will match to some extent. For example, you don’t want a field of grass filled with butterflies to be the background of a picture with a sad or angry character, but things like a dark forest/alley or dry grass and/or soil can be easy. do the trick. Another thing that can be added to enhance the feeling is to add rain/lightning. For something with a pleasant atmosphere, green fields and butterflies will be perfect. Making the sky clear and bright yellow (like late morning or early sunset) can enhance the effect. Environment plays such a role in emotions that this “step” should probably be titled “Expressing Emotions Part 2”, but “setting the stage” sounds better, doesn’t it?
The title of the graphic in the photo above: Torn (try to guess what background is used for this ;)! )

Unless you are an incredibly talented artist, don’t assume that everything will be perfect the first time. It took me about two years to get to the point where I am with the manga and I’m still not completely satisfied with my results. The photo above forms a progression line that shows how my style has changed in the two years since I started. It starts with a newer drawing (which I will teach you to draw in the next steps) and ends with one of the first “manga” drawings. If you notice the last photo doesn’t have a watermark, it’s because it’s so ugly I won’t even protect it. It is free for any use.
Image titles (first to last): Gone But Not Forgotten, Sarah, America, Sister Toy, Shy, Rock Climbing, Stripey
I’m not sure why, but I always draw best when I draw without sketches, but I know this: most people use sketches, so I draw sketches (after doing lineart) to make it easier for you. Unfortunately, it might not be the most accurate since I haven’t used it in the drawing process.
Tip: If you use paper, make a very light line so that it can be removed. If you’re using a computer, use light lines that don’t match the background or lineart you’re drawing.

After placing the sketch, start drawing the lineart. Lineart is the basis for all but a few manga styles. They give your character the most. To shorten the line, create your own dynamic with the size set to disappear. The length of the fade can be set in the tool options. Play around with different dynamics settings until you get one you like. Don’t be afraid to zoom in when you’re working on a photo. No need to use the power of digital imaging.
Tip: start with the nose or ears! I don’t know why, but it helps to get the proportions more accurate.
Note: I accidentally made the outline in this photo a little thicker than I intended. I fixed this (sort of) later by selecting lineart, inverting the selection, and using the eraser over it. Try experimenting with the thickness and opacity of the lines until you find a combination you like. I recommend using two or three pixels of a hard brush, or three or four pixels of a soft brush.
Now that you have your lineart ready, create a new layer and use Free Select to make a selection around the edges of the lineart. Fill this option with whatever color you want your cat to have. If the cat has two or more colors, fill in the options with the other color the cat has; then click the alpha lock button in the layers panel and use the free selection tool to add more colors.

Then create another layer (between the lineart layer and the base color layer). Select the iris and fill it with a lighter version of the desired eye color. When it’s done, use it
