You will find many tutorials that will teach you how to draw a nose starting with three circles. While this is a great way to draw an average nose, it doesn’t help when you want to draw a portrait or a specific nose. Instead, I like to start by finding the unique lines and angles of the nose you’re drawing. Think of it as a structural diagram of the nose. This will help you see if it is wide or narrow, pointed or twisted, long or short. To avoid drawing a nose that is too round or too generic, draw these angles as straight lines first.

Now that we have an outline, we can start making the nose look more natural. Bend the edges of all angles. Then add three ellipses to represent the ball of the nose and the two wings of the nose. It’s important to keep the drawing lines light because the nose actually has very little edge, as we’ll see in the next step.

Now it’s time to start shading. But before doing that, you need to identify which areas will be lightly shaded and which will be dark. When drawing, it’s important to look at things differently than you normally do. We are trying to display something that has three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. So what does a nose look like in a simple 3D shape? The shape of the nose can be broken down into its main surface planes (any part of the nose that faces a different direction is a “plane”):

Each of these planes has a different tonal value depending on whether it is facing the light or not. Generally, the top of the nose is very light and has a high point. You can create it by leaving the page blank.

Before continuing, make sure to delete any sketch lines you no longer need. Next, lightly shade or “block” other parts of the nose that the light doesn’t hit directly, such as the sides and base. Keep it light for now by using one or two shades of gray. You can always go dark later.

In the last step, we start blocking the shadow with one or two values of gray. The key now is to add three to seven tonal values from light gray to black. This will require some patience and some care. Ask yourself: What are the lighter parts? What are the dark areas? What should be light gray, medium gray and dark gray?

Continue shading with light pressure, creating smooth, seamless shading layers like a gray gradient. Just like a nose doesn’t have hard edges, your drawing shouldn’t have hard edges.

Try to blend each layer with the one below. You can use a mixing stump, cotton swab, or cloth to gently mix your ash layers. It’s best to start blending in the light areas and then move to the dark areas, not the other way around, so the light areas don’t become too dark.

Finally, take one last look at your inspiration photo or model to find the black areas and make sure your drawing is the same shade of black. This will add contrast and 3D shape to your drawing.

Follow the four steps above to learn how to draw a nose or practice here on YouTube: How to draw a nose? Watching my favorite detective show, I could well understand the frustration of the police artist trying to make out the suspect’s face from the witness description. He made several attempts to get the nose right until he suddenly fixed a line, and the witness was able to shout with certainty that it was the man he had seen. Even if it’s a fictional story, I often find that if the nose isn’t right, the person is unrecognizable. Therefore, this is one of the most important elements to master in portraiture.

To help you with your nose, I’ve created these five steps. Check out what I did and find out how easy it is!

You may not realize it, but your nose is a combination of many shapes that make up one feature. The easiest way to get the right representation is to start with simple geometric shapes. With this basic structure, I can make it so that everyone recognizes it as a nose. Once that’s done, add shadows with a pencil to give it depth and help it appear three-dimensional.

How To Learn To Draw

Our noses are symmetrical, the same on each side. To keep that symmetry, I started with a vertical line. At the end, I put a circle. I overlapped it on each side. Later, these become the tip or ball of the nose and the wings that open and close the nostrils.

Above the nose, I drew a trapezoid to represent the bridge. Above, I added a close-up in reverse. Because the nose is wide between the bridge and the tip, a line went there.

The bridge comes out where it connects to the cheeks. It’s a good idea to add lines on the sides to remember, otherwise your nose will look like a beak, and we don’t want that! These lines also came in handy when I started adding hatches.

Try to imagine the end of the nose as a sphere, so that it is easier to imagine how the light passes through it. In this case, the light is coming from above, so there is more light at the top and less at the bottom. One way to know where to darken when you start shading is to divide the nose along the contour lines that separate the top and bottom.

Portrait Drawing For Beginners: The Grid Method

Using the bridge as a guide, I connected all the lines, then reinforced them and added the nose. Only then can you get the true shape of your subject’s nose. I recommend that you take your time until you are completely satisfied that the move is a good one. In this case, I could see the nose taking shape as I thought.

Shadows can transform a flat drawing into one with depth. I started this process where there was the least amount of light: the nostrils, under the tip and on the sides. Can you see how the hatching in these areas is starting to look like a nose stuck to the paper?

Realistic maps use the value scale as a way to insert dark, medium, and light values to give the appearance of shadows, which give the map dimension. Do this by gradually building shadows from dark to light. Now that I’ve layered the darker areas, I continue with the midtones, working around the ridgeline, tip and nose.

Tip: It’s helpful to use drawing pencils of different lead hardness to make these shadows easier. Hardness is denoted by a letter (H or B), H pencils give harder strokes for light marks and B gives softer strokes for darker ones. I recommend using a professional drawing package for best results.

For the lighter areas, I used an eraser and removed the graphite from the crest, nose ball, and wings until I had a small white paper.

And that’s it! Now you know the secret to drawing a nose that looks real. I bet it’s not as hard as you thought. Start with a base of shapes, add location lines, connect lines, start with dark areas and finish by adding midtones and highlights.

You can have a lot of fun filling your sketchbook up the nose. The internet is a treasure trove of noses to use for practice, including big ones, button noses, curved noses, and more. The more pictures you draw, the easier it will be to draw a real person. As you practice, you will feel better, I guarantee! I’d love to know how your nose drawing goes, so leave a comment in the section below. In this tutorial I will show you how to draw a human nose in detail. I promise the lesson will be simple and effective.
