You will find many tutorials that will teach you how to draw a nose starting with three circles. While this is a great way to draw an average nose, it doesn’t help when you want to draw a portrait or a specific nose. Instead, I like to start by finding the unique lines and angles of the nose you’re drawing. Think of it as a structural diagram of the nose. This will help you see if it is wide or narrow, pointed or twisted, long or short. To avoid drawing a nose that is too round or too generic, draw these angles as straight lines first.

Now that we have an outline, we can start making the nose look more natural. Bend the edges of all angles. Then add three ellipses to represent the ball of the nose and the two wings of the nose. It’s important to keep the drawing lines light because the nose actually has very little edge, as we’ll see in the next step.

Now it’s time to start shading. But before doing that, you need to identify which areas will be lightly shaded and which will be dark. Shadows can transform a flat drawing into one with depth. I started this process where there was the least amount of light: the nostrils, under the tip and on the sides. Can you see how the hatching in these areas is starting to look like a nose stuck to the paper?

Realistic maps use the value scale as a way to insert dark, medium, and light values ​​to give the appearance of shadows, which give the map dimension. Do this by gradually building shadows from dark to light. Now that I’ve layered the darker areas, I continue with the midtones, working around the ridgeline, tip and nose.

Tip: It’s helpful to use drawing pencils of different lead hardness to make these shadows easier. Hardness is denoted by a letter (H or B), H pencils give harder strokes for light marks and B gives softer strokes for darker ones. I recommend using a professional drawing package for best results.

For the lighter areas, I used an eraser and removed the graphite from the crest, nose ball, and wings until I had a small white paper.
