By the end of the lesson, you’ll have the skills to draw any character you can imagine, and be very cute. What are you waiting for? Let’s make a beautiful picture. 2. What makes things beautiful?: Let’s start the lesson with a simple explanation of what makes things beautiful. As humans, we are programmed to think that babies are very cute and we imitate their characteristics in our cute illustrations. But we artists can take advantage of this by expanding these wonderful qualities. I will show you the rules of drawing for two wise men, but they are not written in stone. Make sure you do it your way and in your own way. You’ll find that sometimes using a feature is enough to make something better, so get creative and break the rules. If you’ve ever taken a cute animal class, you’ll remember that the bigger the head, the better. The same rule applies to any cute person or beauty you do. Another thing to note is that the smaller the head, the older the character, and the bigger the head, the younger. But that doesn’t mean you can’t draw old men with big heads. Just keep that in mind. It is recommended to play with the ratio of the head to the body as you like. Another rule I’ve mentioned in other beauty tutorials is that rounded edges are more beautiful than sharp ones. If you look at babies, they are rounder and softer than adults. Also, sharp edges make us think of sharp objects like spikes or knives, so they feel more dangerous. But it’s all about maintaining balance in your work. As you can see, the one on the right is not cuter than the one on the left, but it looks less scary and therefore cute. It’s really a personal choice. I’m not saying to avoid sharp edges, just be careful with them and maybe soften them with a little curve instead of an angle. But it depends on you. A very important rule is not to overcomplicate the characters. As you can see, I added too much detail to the first character, and not only is there too much visual noise, it’s really distracting from the comedy. The more you capture your simple personality, the cuter it will be. Think about it. Babies do not have wrinkles or hair even if they are copies of adults. The product on the right is more attractive than the one on the left and is easier to draw. Also note that I did not include the nose. I usually don’t because you don’t need to. But you can, if you want, keep it simple. If your character feels dead, just remove a few details and that will usually fix it and make it better. Just remember to keep it simple. If you need more inspiration for drawing cute people, I suggest you do a quick search on chubby characters. It is a type of blue art that appeals to people with large heads and simple features. It also has a different style because the eye is often drawn to something big and unique. Big eyes can be really cute because babies have big eyes too. Just because I don’t like drawing cuties like that doesn’t mean you can’t draw this cutie. Perhaps you like the look of big eyes and can add a lot of color to your personality. I also created a Pinterest board full of cute characters. I invite you to find inspiration here and think about why these characters are so cute. What rules do they follow and what rules are broken? By noticing subtle things like this, you will arrive at your own image. If you want to speed up the learning process, you can copy the ones you like the most. It really helps you examine it and notice the details, but don’t share it anywhere claiming to be yours. It’s okay to copy for teaching purposes as long as you do it yourself in a sketchbook or you ask the artist for permission and give them credit. But in this tutorial you can copy the drawing method or you can do it with me. You also have permission to share it. Let’s look at the basics of making a cutie’s body using a simple oval or circle and a beanie. Easy, right? 3. The Oval & Bean: Anatomy can be intimidating, especially for a beginner artist. So I came up with a technique to simplify cutie’s body image. You just need to draw a circle or an oval and shape a bean, which is actually just a curved line that is curved at one end. You can draw any shape, from a simple round oval for the head to a beanie shape for the body, and I’ll show you how in seconds. But the reason I chose the beanie is because of the slight curves. Curves are very important and here’s why. As you can see, if I make my character completely symmetrical, it looks cute but flat. Now, if I use a curve made from the body to the angle of the head, it looks more alive and interesting. The second character is realistic because it looks like it’s moving and the body feels dimensional in 3D, even though I choose to paint it flat with no shading. Another great thing about bean bags is that you can wear them with anything
