Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas! 2017
The show looks great. John Lee Beatty’s sets and Robert Morgan’s costumes make exemplary use of Dr. Seuss and the distinctive characters, especially Morgan, who brings the Whos and Whovilles to colorful life.
He does the same for the Grinch, played by Philip Bryan with a manic glee that’s more Beetlejuice than Boris Karloff. Dressed in a green fur that really looks as greasy as a black banana peel, Bryan rocks the stage with both his acting and vocal range.
The show is often more fun to watch than to listen to, as many songs fail. Timothy Mason’s attempts to use Seuss’ signature prose style in his lyrics are impressive, but Mel Marvin’s melodies are hard to find amid the often chaotic energy and frantic choreography.
The best song, of course, is “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” the centerpiece of Seuss and Albert Hague’s 1966 cartoon. Sung beautifully by Akita-friendly Bob Lauder who stands out as Old Max, the show’s cynical narrator. The best original is “One of aKind,” which perfectly illuminates the one big change Mason made to Seuss’s narrative.

In the book, the Grinch hates Christmas and the Who’s happiness just because he’s the Grinch and maybe because his shoes are too tight. Here is an evolutionary oddity, the first and last of his kind, and he has yet to come to terms with his overwhelming loneliness.
In Mason’s version, Cindy Lou Who begins to melt the Grinch’s tiny heart, leading to a triumphant scene where said heart grows three sizes and the Grinch discovers his humanity (Whomanity?). Everything is played for hugs, which suits the purpose of the show. .
But Seuss’s Grinch was a cruel bastard who won over Max and shamelessly manipulated Cindy Lou. This brutality served a dual purpose, especially in cartoons: it scared the kids, while giving the story enough adult content to make it one of the few shows to be repeated every year for more than 50 years.
“Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” is clearly doing its job, having been in near-continuous production for more than two decades. Kids will love it, but probably won’t obsess over the soundtrack, which is a nice win for parents in this post-“Frozen” world.
