High School Football Field Diagram – NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A new group is envisioning a football stadium near a high school in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward. The move comes nearly two years after FOX 8 and The Athletic investigated the financial mismanagement of a separate group that sought to build the Field of Dreams after Hurricane Katrina. More than a million dollars were collected, but the square remained empty.

Former New Orleans City Councilman Arnie Filkov was one of the sponsors of the original project, which pledged to build a football stadium outside of Carver High School. The Field of Dreams project has attracted support from across the country and even grabbed national headlines, and was even mentioned by former President Barack Obama during a visit to New Orleans.

But more than a decade after the ‘Field of Dreams’, our investigation in 2019 revealed that almost all the money had gone – without a stadium to show for it. To this day, the square remains a vacant lot, a reminder of broken promises to the community.

Our investigation revealed that nearly $200,000 of the donated money went to the organization’s former executive director, Betty Washington. Records show Washington spent the money on a computer, a refrigerator, internet and phone bills and paid a contractor who never visited the field.

“A lot of people gave real money to what they thought would be a great, honest project that would help the children of New Orleans,” Philkow said in 2019.

When we interviewed Filkov in 2019, he said he had forgotten about the project and assumed the stadium was under construction. He was angry and saddened to hear that FOX 8 found out. According to our news, he decided to make new efforts to make the dream of a football stadium a reality.

He is working with a new board to create a new stadium called 9th Ward Stadium. Members include architect Mark Ripple, former state senator Ann Duplessis, businessman Roy Glapion and New Orleans St. Duce McAllister already has.

“Based on history, we understand that we have to fix this project,” Filkov said. “There’s no margin for error here in terms of integrity. I can assure people that we’re going to give everything we can. Nobody’s taking any money from us. We’re all volunteers, and we’re doing it because We love New Orleans.”

The newly planned 9th Ward Stadium complex is adjacent to the Carver High School campus (9th Ward Stadium).

The new “Dream” is a multi-purpose stadium located north of Carver High School for football, soccer and track and field. Plans also suggest a potential location for the New Orleans Public School Hall of Fame. Price – 5 million USD.

“It will not be easy, we will need the help of the public, business leaders in our community, all those who care about youth and economic development,” Filkov said.

The group expects $1 million in project funding to come from the state. County lawmakers are working to secure money from the state’s capital investment fund to use for the project.

Byron Addison is a 1996 graduate of Carver High School. He is now the head football coach and said the kids and his school deserve the field.

“It’s going to send [a message] that, hey, Ward 9 — we’re still alive,” Addison said. “We’re still doing good things here, and I think it’s going to attract people from all over the community, and I just think the stadium is going to do a lot for that community. Everyone was just looking forward to it.”

Former state Sen. Anna Duplessis, a member of the new group, agrees with the coach that the stadium could do a lot for the community and potentially bring in new businesses.

“Where there are people, there needs to be other things, restaurants, there needs to be other types of development to support what this stadium is going to bring,” Duplessis said.

The new organization is different from the previous group. The only task of the new group is to collect money. Once completed, the money and project will go to the Orleans Parish School Board, which owns the property. The school board will be responsible for the construction and management of the stadium.

“It’s not about what has been done right or wrong in the past. What’s done is done. We will positively move forward in an open, honest and transparent manner and the donors we seek will demand this. Because some of them paid for the previous project, and the first question they asked us is how are you different from the previous one?

The Orleans Parish School Board is expected to meet with the new group in the coming weeks and sign a memorandum of understanding.
