One thing I’ve really learned this year through all the craziness is to make sure I have lots of activities to keep the kids entertained at home.

I realized that I relied a little too much on gym class, play dates, school activities, and shopping trips. While these things weren’t much of a choice for most of this year, I really had to get creative.

During the first few weeks at home, the kids and I started to go a little crazy. It felt like we used up all the toys in the playroom and baked enough cookies to feed Santa for years!

Before the events that began earlier this year, my oldest son was enrolled in a Mommy and Me preschool program. Basically, it was preschool for him, but there were parents to help when needed. My son and I both loved these classes and looked forward to them each week.

I started thinking about what I loved most about them and wanted to try to recreate as much preschool as I could at home. He loved playing with other kids but since that wasn’t an option at the time, the next best thing was a sand table and arts and crafts.

So the next day, we left the house and ordered some big buckets and drove in a pickup to play with sand from the home improvement store. I came up with the following mess and we sheeted the floor with buckets of sand, trucks, shovels, buckets and shells. The sand station was a big hit and we still play it in our daily routine.

The next activity I tried to include as much as possible was arts and crafts. As for me, being a huge art lover, I really enjoyed coming up with fun crafts and projects that my son would work on at preschool.

Some of the crafts that the teacher comes with have steps for the kids to follow, and others are completely up to them. A simple project she set up was a heart cut out of construction paper for Valentine’s Day. Then they had the kids put glue, glitter, pom poms and stickers on it. It was such a simple concept but it really got the children’s creativity flowing and each heart was so unique.

We tried to reproduce this idea for whatever season, or holiday is coming up. During the cutting seasons, I used to cut fire trucks, dump trucks or bulldozers for my son to decorate. (He was actually in the trucks this year!).

And now I decided to share some of these ideas with you! Today, I have this free printable gingerbread man pattern. There are many different ways you can use this template. From coloring pages, stencils, window decorations and more! Let your and your children’s creativity really run wild!

Both templates below are designed to print on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Depending on what project you plan to use these patterns for, I might recommend printing them on white paper due to the paper’s increased durability.
