German Paper Star – Every year it starts in early November and runs through the Christmas season from this popular back peak. So it has become a tradition that I repost my tutorial for folding plain paper strips into delicate three-dimensional stars that many remember from childhood.

What Is A Froebel Star ? German Folded Paper Stars
Before you begin, you will need 4 strips of paper. I use basic 8 1/2″ x 11″ computer printer paper. You can use whatever you like as long as the paper is not thick and/or stiff. For the little star in the photo above, cut 4 1/2″ x 11″ strips. For the large star shown above, cut 4 1″ x 11″ strips. Keep your remaining pieces of paper handy, we need to lengthen our strips for the last step. In the future, you can make them longer at first, or if your paper is longer than your computer printer paper, that’s great. Ideally, you want about an extra 6 inches attached to the 11 inch length. My goal is to help you understand that getting strap extensions to complement a star is no big deal. It will free your imagination to use beautiful notepad paper or brown paper bags…and don’t worry about the size of the paper. At least start with the measurements I gave you.
* You can cut the strip of paper if you have trouble getting through these small spaces. I always have to make a cut here and there along the way.
*Hint, with the remaining sides you will now have a flap of paper that you just move to one side as you work and then back down as you work.

Now we need to stretch the strips of paper. You can actually stretch the straps before you start. However, I did this on purpose because you’ll see that no matter how big you want your stars to be…even if your strips of paper are really short…you can make them longer with no problem. can complete the task!
*Tip: Every time you go through the strap, it might be a little wide, just take your scissors and cut a small piece of the strap and it will go right through. I usually go through this several times when I make these stars.
I won’t walk you through the rest of the steps again… so now just continue with steps 5-7 and you’re done!

Learn how to make these Froebel paper stars to hang on your Christmas tree this holiday season. Classic Danish Christmas decorations made of paper. These lovely 3D stars can be used to make wreaths, hung from branches or windows or tied to gift bags for the perfect festive ending.
Every year I try to make a few more decorations to hang on the tree. So far I’ve made clay stars, watercolor clay trees and candy canes, glitter filled glass bubbles, white clay Christmas decorations and finally these 3D paper Christmas stars. This year I decided to make paper Froebel stars.
A Froebel star, also known as a German/Nordic/Danish or Moravian star, is a three-dimensional star made by weaving together 4 strips of paper. You will need 1.5 cm by 45 cm strips of colored or double-sided patterned paper. I bought mine from Sustain Green, they recently opened a shop in Chester and I love everything they sell, but for those of you looking around you can find paper on Etsy. I won’t lie, this star has a lot of steps. The first few times I tried it was a complete disaster, so try to be patient. It takes a few tries to get it right, but once you start it’s hard to stop. Watch the video below to start making your own.
Paper German Stars Video Tutorial

These stars look amazing hanging on a tree, window, fireplace or just about anywhere. They can be hung on the rug, scattered around the table as the perfect finishing touch or just used as Christmas gift decorations. By the way, while he was playing a carol and they were talking. Moravian Star Paper
Once you get the cases, you can make a star in 5 minutes. Turn them into beds while you watch your favorite show or grab your teens and tunes and make some vacation memories.

Although it looks complicated, the ornaments are made with 4 strips of paper and simple repetitive folds. You can use notepad paper like I did, or other double-sided paper, so you can see both sides after folding. I prefer the thinner paper because it is easier to maneuver and creates better sharp points. If you don’t have paper on hand, you can get pre-cut strips of paper and cut them yourself for a while.
Ratio 1:24. They can be long (which will give you an extra “little” to work with), but not short or you won’t have enough paper to complete. To save you from doing the math, here’s a handy cube chart to make it easier.
Froebel Star Images, Stock Photos & Vectors
The size of your paper strips will determine the final size of your stars. Narrow strips will make smaller stars, wider strips will make bigger stars.
When you’re done making a group of stars, you can hang them however you like or add a “rock and glitter” step (my 7 year old’s favorite part!). The addition of this wax dipping step was traditionally used to waterproof folded star ornaments for outdoor decoration. Even if you don’t plan to hang them outside, dipping your German stars in wax will help preserve the ornaments for reuse over the years. Betcha can’t just make a paper German star. I just needed to make a star to include as a bridal shower gift and see what happened.
