Printable Multiplication Chart (1 10) & Tricks

A hundreds chart is a group of 10 x 10 that shows all the numbers from 1 to 100, from smallest to largest. It looks like this:

The hundreds table is very useful for children who are comfortable with the number 100 and develop their counting skills.

In the hundreds table, the numbers are read in rows of 10 from left to right, starting with the number 1 in the upper left corner and ending with 100 in the lower right corner.

If you look at the horizontal rows of numbers, you can see that from left to right the numbers increase by 1:

If you look at the vertical bars, you’ll see that as you move down a square, the number increases by 10.

For example, if you look at the column highlighted in red above, you’ll see that the numbers increase by 10 each time (1, 11, 21, 31, etc.). Every number ends with 1, but the decimal point increases by 1 each time.

Nowadays, you can see that the traditional hundred chart has been replaced by a count-to-120 chart (a 120 chart), such as:

There are many reasons to use hundreds of maps and explore with your child. Here are some:

This may seem obvious, but the hundreds chart is a great tool for children who are working on developing their number sense and learning to count.

Let’s think about counting for a moment. Ask a young child to count to 100 and you may find that they lose track of time, skip or repeat numbers along the way.

If you use a hundred chart to count, they can follow the numbers on the chart as they count. (Then, if you think about it more, a map of several hundred is basically a

The number they say, which means they start to associate the name of the number with the numbers that represent that number.

You can also use a number table to reverse the counting – just read the numbers from right to left, not left to right.

In addition to counting by 1, the hundreds chart is a great way to introduce countdowns, which leads nicely into #2 below…

The idea behind it is to subtract from 4 numbers and then shade in the 5th (and then repeat this process when subtracting).

When you skip counting, it’s also worth taking the time to look at the patterns that appear in the hundreds square, both in terms of the numbers slipped in and the patterns created by the sliding squares.

For example, with 5 (above), you can see that the shaded squares create two vertical lines. As for the numbers we shaded, they all end in 5 or 0.

Here you can see it creating even more vertical columns from the shaded squares. Of course, counting down from 0 to 2 means that we have all even numbers (ending with 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8).

And with the last example, we go beyond the counting of 3. This is fun because the numbers always make a great pattern on the map. It’s great to see the diagonal lines pop up in the calculations.

Another great way to use a hundreds chart is to add and subtract numbers within 100. Although it seems confusing, it is actually true.

Then you want to add 30. We know that each step up the map increases by 10. We know that 30 is equal to 3 groups of 10. So this means we want to draw 3 rectangles on the map like this:

Start by looking at 49 on the hundreds chart. When we add 13, we want to add 10 first and then 3.

So starting at 49, move down one square to add 10. Then move 3 squares to the right. In this example, we’re actually completing a line, so just go to the next one.

Let’s start by looking at 68 on the hundreds chart. We’re going to subtract 27, so first we want to subtract 20 and then 7.

To subtract 20, move the chart up 2 squares (2 tens). Then subtract 7 units 7 squares to the left.

Once children understand how the numbers in the diagram work (adding and subtracting 10s and 1s), the diagram can easily solve addition and subtraction involving two-digit numbers.
