This Log Cabin pattern can be used for living room areas in many fabrics, with the additional fabric needed for background colors and stripes.
The entire area around the log cabins on this quilt is a great place for quilters to display custom quilting. A straight line quilting base or wavy quilting will look great.
I used Jet Black fabric for my background because it’s VERY black. My other fabrics were cherrywood hand dyed solids. They provide a smooth, velvety look. Some solid or small print blenders will work better.

Note that in addition to the dramatic black background, I used 3 different shades of red and 3 different shades of gray.
I used EQ8 quilt design software to show you what a bright variation of this quilt with pink and green floral yarn would look like. Is not it beautiful?
I also used my Accuquilt GO! and a strip cutting die for making log cabin blocks. This is completely optional.
Let’s break it! A Log Cabin Block can have many different looks. The main features are the center piece and the straps sewn around this block. In another post I show you how to sew a log cabin block of any size.

I have many different patterns of log cabins that you can try for bags and pot holders! Find them in these trendy wardrobe patterns and free trunks.
Once your 9 log house blocks are sewn together we will attach them to the larger back pieces and finish the hem.
To stay organized, I suggest keeping 1-26 pieces in labeled envelopes or plastic bags, removing each one as needed.
If you have an Accuquilt cutter, you can quickly sew a triangle square without using any shortcuts in these instructions. You can also use a 1 1/2” strip die to cut long strips of fabric to the width of your fabric. The following templates will work with this quilt pattern:
Log Cabin (fpp) Tutorial + Pattern
Use 4 square pieces of fabric to make an HST (square triangle) unit in the center of each block. Use a minimum seam allowance of 1/4” and a standard seam length of 2.
1. Place the 4” x 4” background fabric square right sides together with the 4” x 4” dark gray fabric square. Use a light colored pencil or tailor’s chalk to draw a diagonal line across the top square. This is the cut line. Join the squares together.
2. Sew a little more than 1/4” away from the cut line on both sides of the drawn line.
5. Repeat with remaining 4” squares to make 10 half triangle square units. You’ll only need 9, so you’ll have more.
Bust Your Stash With This Log Cabin Quilt Pattern!
If you are a beginner quilter, I suggest sewing each log cabin block one at a time. If you have a lot of quilting experience, you might find it quick to put all 9 of these blocks together at once. The instructions below are for 1 block.
1. Sew ‘piece 1’ to the right side of the HST unit as shown above. Open and press.
2. Sew ‘piece 2’ to the top of the piece as shown above. Open and press.
5. Continue stitching the strips to the block clockwise and press the block as each new strip is added.

You can also cut and square the block to size after the new strip is sewn and pressed. The block should grow 1” in width or height after each new line.
After sewing row 26 into the log house block, cut and square the block to 16 1/2” x 16 1/2”.
1. Place your blocks on the wall, bed or floor of the quilt. Pay close attention to the position of each block.
1. Sew a 6 1/2” x 48 1/2” rectangle to the left side of the quilt and a 16 1/2” x 48 1/2” rectangle to the right side of the quilt.

2. Sew a 30 1/2” x 70 1/2” rectangle to the top of the quilt and a 6 1/2” x 70 1/2” rectangle to the bottom.
1. Cut or sew a 74″ x 88″ piece of fabric and sandwich a quilt with lining, batting and top.
3. Quilt as you like. Directly
