How To Crochet A Beanie

Can you see there is no gathering at the top of the hat!! And that’s because you’ll be designing the top using short rows… If you’ve never done short rows before, don’t worry! I will show you how to knit them in step by step pictures!

Very easy! A crochet short row is actually a row that doesn’t work all the stitches of the previous row! So you don’t end the line! At the end of the row, you leave the last stitches raw, turn and go back to the number of stitches indicated in the pattern. Simple, right?

The height of the hat is determined by the length of the foundation chain, and the width of the hat is determined by the number of rows.

Depending on your working tension, you may need to work more/fewer rows than the pattern shown.

For best results, try wearing a hat on your head. If it is too wide, you can still open a few rows before closing the top; if it is too tight, you can work a few extra rows.

Note that the cap will stretch more after wearing, so don’t make it too loose!

Leave the long tail used at the end to cover the opening at the top of the hat, Ch 39.

NOTE: Unstretched piece after row 1 measures approx. 11 inches (approx. 28 cm). After a few repetitions with short rows, it will decrease!
