Five Senses Coloring Pages

Five Senses Coloring Pages – As an early afternoon lesson, we learned about the Five Senses in the area. My daughter saw something on PBS for kids about using your sense of smell to identify things and asked if we could try something similar. So of course I made it more educational and made it more inclusive of all 5 senses. The activity lasted several hours with three children. We have had to modify some of our operations to be COVID friendly. Each family has its own food for taste and smell activities.

First, we filled out the table below. You will need scissors and glue/glue. For the younger children, we had to tell them the words at the bottom and ask them what they used for the word.

Example: Smell: “What do you use to smell?” (nose). Then we take a closer look at each of the senses. Check out the activities below.

Second, we focus on smells. Cut out the food card with your child, or you can cut it out yourself. Have blank cards in case you want to make different dishes or accessories.

I used small plastic containers and covered them with foil. I then labeled them with numbers (1-8) and punched small holes in the foil. Silicone cupcake liners, dixie cups or small dishes are all great for this.

As your child sniffs, choose which smell card matches the smell in the box (see example on the left). They may change their mind as they go along.

Once all the scents are labeled, it’s time to reveal what’s inside. Ask your child to remove the tin foil one at a time. How many scents did you guess correctly? Fault?

Third, we focus on Taste. From the Smell activity, complete the Taste activity by using the food containers inside.

Ask your child to taste each food and see if it matches the flavors on the worksheet. Or maybe they match none? What other flavors do they have? Spicy? Tangy?

The fourth activity we focus on is touch. Find a substance and put it in a bowl. Then let your child explore the materials – describe how they feel. Ask them to identify which substance resembles the words listed on each finger. How did they decide? What was used to find the texture? (hand)

Examples: bark, cotton balls, cotton balls, ice, packages of peanuts, beans (anything around the house). The more opportunities it offers, the more challenges.

In the fifth activity, we explore vision. Complete the following activities. We used a silk scarf and a stretch headband for the blindfold.

Finally, we’ll look at the sound. Have your child sit quietly and pay attention outside. Ask them to circle what they hear on the worksheet.

All 5 senses are considered! What is your child’s favorite? All three children who participated in these activities with me had different interests. We hope your children have fun learning when they do these activities!

The 5 Senses Coloring Pages Pack I created was mostly to fill in the gaps I found while searching for online coloring pages for my kids! Although I found some sheets of paper to color in the cute pictures, there wasn’t a lot of paper for the extra work and I could have really let the kids interact and think about the 5 senses theme.

By encouraging your child to see, hear, taste, smell and touch the things around them (when it’s safe!!), you teach your child much more naturally than just telling them something.

Now, I don’t mean that you have to ask your child a series of insightful questions, but these coloring pages provide an opportunity to review and discuss experiences. It’s a mirror image!

Like anything, not all are created equal. Basically, I am my teacher who evaluates the resources and I am very selective when it comes to what I use and recommend.

All the coloring pages I have made for you (and my kids!) meet the criteria below. The others I linked to you are from their original creators, but they were chosen just the same!

Overall, these 5 senses coloring pages are suitable for all ages, so they’re great if, like me, you have multiple kids coloring them together. Every age and stage of natural use is different.

The youngest toddlers may just need to color and expose themselves to more advanced concepts, but most of the time it’s just doodling and making! There is absolutely nothing wrong with it!!

Older kids (3-5) can color and do as much of the actual activity as they like. Don’t make it a chore or task for your older child
