Firework Acrostic Poem – They looked at some examples of poetry, answered some poetry concepts and discussed various poetic features such as alliteration, simile, onomatopoeia, descriptive words and rhyme. Last week they had the chance to apply their knowledge by writing their own poems. They wrote some beautiful acrostics about fireworks and also some very creative poems about their favorite colors.

In this lesson I wanted the students to apply the new words they had learned
From the video below I didn’t tell them any information about the video, I just asked them to listen carefully and think about what they could hear.
Fantastic Fireworks Poetry!
We listened to it again and this time I encouraged the students to think about what vocabulary words could be used to describe the words we heard.
Then we listened for a third and final time, followed by a brainstorming session on the board about what the students thought they heard.
After a good chat about the sounds we could hear and what they could be, I played the video on the projection screen for everyone to see. The students were very excited to find out what the words were and they were all surprised to hear that there were different types of fireworks. As we watched the video, I noticed different sounds
I then gave this worksheet that had students think of sound words (onomatopoeia), action words (verbs), and adjectives that could be used to describe fireworks in the video.
Fun Activities To Spark Creativity This Bonfire Night
I then asked the students to come up with five descriptive sentences using the words on their worksheet. For students who find free writing more challenging, I wrote some sentence structures on the board to help them;
Using the examples in Google Images, I asked students to use their sentences to create firework-shaped poems for homework.
This particularly impressed me because the student rhymed and created a great song that I didn’t ask for. Although it is not a tightly designed poem…!
I have so many things I want to take some pictures of, but before I can even think about taking some pictures, I’m going and giving something back to the students! Hopefully I can add them later as there was some really impressive work
Poetry And Fireworks!
It was a really nice bunch that an ESL teacher wouldn’t normally include in their curriculum – the beauty of being left to my own devices. Some people are a little intimidated by the thought of teaching creative writing, but hopefully this goes to show that if you keep the process simple and broken down, you can get a whole class of students to create great writing!
