Supplies needed: 7/8″ grosgrain ribbon – I use royal blue and white 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon – for your clip and lining in the middle, I use white. Alligator clip hot glue gun and glue lighter

Step 1: Cut 6″ of your 7/8″ grosgrain ribbon. You can use two pieces of the same color or two different colors like I used. Use your light heat sealer on all ends of your ribbon. Or if you have a wood burner you can cut and heat your ribbon in one step! If making a lot of bows I recommend a wood burner!

Step 2: Fold your ribbon in half and fold in the middle. If you are using dark ribbon and cannot see the center, use a pen to mark the center. As long as you mark the center inside the ribbon, it won’t show when the bow is finished.

Step 3: Fold each end to the center and hot glue it. You don’t want the centers to overlap – they should just meet at the crease you made.

Step 4: Complete step 3 with your other 6″ piece of ribbon. If you are using printed ribbon make sure the printed side is facing down.

Step 5: Pinch the center of your bow towards you and put a little glue on the inside. We only want to glue a lot of the center, so don’t use too much glue!

Step 6: We now have a piece glued to each side where we glued the middle. We will fold each piece back and glue them. Your center should now be flat.

Step 8: Line up both bows and glue. Make sure the centers are both lined up and the loops are even on each side.

Step 9: Using your matching 3/8″ ribbon, wrap the center. Heat the end and glue to the back of the bow. Wrap the center to the front and glue to the back ribbon.

You’re done! How fast and easy is it? These bows are great for everyday wear! You can also finish them in different ways! I added a bottle cap to my middle to match my daughter’s school logo – perfect spirit day wear! Or a knotted center instead of a flat center would be super cute! JoJo Bows are so popular right now that I thought I’d make a tutorial to show you how you can make your own! This is a really fun craft, and you can wear your big boutique hair bow for years to come. These DIY bows are great for kids to make too!

Your ribbon should be about 36 inches. Fold the end of the ribbon into a loop, and cross it over the top of the remaining ribbon. Hold firmly in place.

Take the other end of the ribbon and fold it around the ribbon, overlapping the end of the first loop you made. Keep it in place. This will make the top two loops of your JoJo style hair bow.

Take the end of the ribbon and fold it under the first loop you made to create a loop. Place it between the first loop and the bottom ribbon and hold tight.

Take the remaining ribbon and fold it diagonally into a bow to create the final loop. Center all the ribbons.

Continue to hold the ribbon together and fold the middle part with a concertina fold. Then wrap a piece of wire around this layer a few times to hold the bow. You can also trim the end of the ribbon if it is too long.

Glue the end of the thin piece of ribbon to the center of the bow with a glue gun. Then wrap the ribbon around the center of the bow and glue in place and back. Cut off the end of the ribbon. Then attach the hair clip to the back with a glue gun.

Please note: This blog post contains affiliate links, however all opinions are my own and I only link to personally recommended products. As a mother of two girls, hair bows are a norm in our daily lives. In fact, the first thing I noticed when I held my new precious firstborn (how blessed I was) was that he had hair. From day one, I was eager to dress up her little head with various bows from her (already) large collection. Big bows, small bows, bright bows, neutral bows… you name it, we have it.

For the first couple of years, I found myself buying hair bows from small boutiques, online retailers, or large department stores. So, as with everything in my craft-approved life, I found myself wondering why I was paying someone else to make something I could easily make myself. A DIY project that I am sure I will love. That’s when I taught myself how to easily DIY ribbon hair bows and never looked back.

To be honest, I’ve done a lot of different hairstyles over the years. Some require sewing cloth, some require hot glue, and others, my favorite, require nothing more than the use of my two hands.

My favorite secret to my DIY ribbon hair bow is finding the “right” ribbon. For all my hair bows, I like to work with ribbon by design. Not only are they of high quality, but these unique designs are created by graphic designers in their own design studio. All ribbons are printed right here in the USA. Choosing ribbons from their many beautiful designs in stock, I love that the ribbon is printed using a dye sublimation process that not only makes it washable, but will never chip or fade.

Furthermore, I love that Ribbon by Design gives you a lot of flexibility to create ribbons for your customers. Most of the ribbons shown in this post are printed in grosgrain, my preference for this project in particular. However, if you like a design that is not available in the fabric you prefer, they will often print it on an alternative fabric of your choice. The ladies at Ribbon by Design truly care about customer satisfaction.

For all my fellow Etsy lovers- Ribbon by Design is also available through the Etsy shop! Check them out here.

DIY ribbon hair bows can be made in many ways, but I think this method is both the easiest and most effective.

Christmas Tree Ribbon Hair Bow

I start by choosing my ribbon designs. I do this by visiting the store’s ribbon by design (divided by category/holiday). You can see all the possibilities here. Available in both satin and grosgrain, choose your ribbon finish (I prefer working with grosgrain, but satin also creates a very beautiful look). Next, choose your ribbon size. Available in 5/8″, 7/8″ and 1.5″ ribbons. I really enjoy working with all the shapes to create different dramatic effects and add variety to my cart.

After purchasing my ribbons from Ribbon by Design (honestly, you won’t find better quality for your dollar), I moved on to buying ribbon clips and bases.

I choose to use ribbon clips when I want to feature the ribbon itself and nothing else. Think simple, sleek, and more elegant stand alone ribbon. I just buy ribbon clips like these here and after making my ribbon bow I slide them into the back knot and finish off the hair clip.

I choose to use a ribbon base (like the big bow before) when I want to highlight the ribbon and add dimension to it. Think bigger, louder, and more visually. To get this look, I shopped the bulk hair bow collection like here. I choose to buy solid colors, allowing the ribbon to be the stand-out feature. I bought packs like here. I was able to attach the ribbon directly to the ribbon base (using the clip that came with the ribbon base) and easily create the final product.
