Decide whether you want to cut the vellum backing. Vellum will diffuse the light making your paper star lamp have a nice sheen and hide the light inside, but the light effect from stars and snowflakes thrown at the wall won’t be as obvious as vellum. You decide which one you like best – vellum lining is optional for both paper star lanterns. If you decide not to use vellum, hide or remove the layer (white triangle).

When you’re ready, click “Done” — no grading, gathering, or gluing required for this project!

I suggest you cut this project from 100 lb. or 110 lb. cardstock or poster board as listed in the list of materials above. These hanging paper star lanterns need to be strong enough to support themselves, and they work really well. For material settings, use the “glitter cardstock” setting as that will give you two passes and a clean cut.

A. First cut a dotted corner from each of the five paper star lantern pieces, including the long side tabs.

B. Fold forward the bottom of the two tabs in the opposite direction from how you folded them in step A. Make sure to fold all five tabs the same way.

C. When installing the vellum lining, spray the inside of the five-star lantern with permanent spray adhesive. Then place the vellum over the halves of each star lantern piece. Let it dry completely before proceeding.

D. Place the missing star point piece in its place and set it aside for now.

E. With the other four pieces, glue the tabs on the long side, stick the tabs on the inside of the other side to form the points. Make sure the pieces fit together flexibly. Repeat all four sections. This will score you four stars.

F. Place glue on one side of the bottom tab of one star point and glue another star point on the other side of the light adjustment tab, working until all four star points are combined together.

G. Take the section you set aside previously and glue the short tabs to the large star assembly – you will need to reach inward to press the layers together as the glue sets.

H. If you want to light your paper star lantern, place the lantern inside now with the string coming off the end of a non-fixed point. Carefully tape the long tab to close your paper star lamp. The final cut is fiddly, so time and care must be exercised when assembling it. Slow down and be patient with yourself.

Originally a Nordic tradition, star lamps are finding their way into homes around the world, and for good reason—they’re beautiful and budget-friendly!

Print the template. Cut out the stars and octagons using a combination of scissors, an X-acto knife, and a hole punch.

Cut out the star and octagon, including the slit in the center of the octagon (the slit will hold the light bulb/wire kit).

Place the octagon face down on your work surface so that the short ends face up and down your work surface. Fold the top and bottom edges back by 1/4″.

Tap the octagonal opening behind the top point of the star, which is positioned above the 4-pointed star and below the 3 circles.

Glue the gold sides of the octagon and star. Repeat Steps 5 & 6 with the other stars, so that the octagon is between the two stars.

Insert the light bulb/wire into the space made by the hole in the center of the octagon. Connect the lamp and hang it on the window. You may remember my first dodecahedron star lamp I posted last summer. I’m in love with our bright crayon-colored lights, but I’m still eager to find time to do more with the original, soft style of oiled watercolor paper. I’ve noticed a few times that the tutorial I linked to is no longer on Blogland, and I noticed on my blog that the stats are

I did a quick search on the internet and saw that most of the other search results related to the same tutorial that no longer exists… so I decided to recreate it! It’s not as well described or photographed as the original, but I can’t just leave all that Google searching hanging, can I? 😉

Paper Star Hi Res Stock Photography And Images

I started by painting two 11″x14″ wet-wet watercolor paintings, some basic colors as I would be cutting them into smaller pieces. When the paint was dry, I coated the paper with a thick layer of olive oil until it was full on the reverse side, wiped off the excess and let the image dry overnight.

While I waited for the pictures to dry, I printed out my Pentagon Template and used my Xacto knife to cut out one of the shapes to use as a stencil.

I traced the pentagon shape on the back side of the image using a light colored pencil of a nice color.

You will need to cut ten pentagons (eleven if you want to base/floor your lamp).

Starting at one corner, draw a line down to each opposite corner, and repeat until two lines are drawn on each corner (it should look like you’re drawing a star).

Fold the first corner to meet the center of the line as shown above. Repeat for all five corners.

Arrange the two pentagons side by side. Open the cover on the side where the pentagons touch and open both covers.

Attach the cover from the pentagon to the right
