Different Octagon Shapes – In third grade, your student will be introduced to the shape of an octagon. The main reason is to see your child connect regularity between all regular polygons.
After studying squares, pentagons and hexagons, your child should begin to develop the ability to ‘connect the dots’ between these and higher level octagons and regular polygons.

These relations are mainly for finding the area and angles of a regular polygon. A four-sided regular polygon (square) finds the degree value of its interior angles.

To get the interior angles, divide the pattern by the number of sides of the regular polygon, which is 360. Then subtract your answer from 180 to get the value of the interior angles.
So even if your child asks about a 20-sided polygon – by now they should have developed the skills to know that the angle values are 180-(360/20).
The detailed steps below will take you from basic identification to constructing an octagon shape and more!
These are great ‘breathers’ for learning, but they’re also great ways to reinforce new knowledge in ways that involve your child’s real-life, approaches to understanding basic geometry concepts.

A regular octagon shape is identified by the number of sides the shape has, the length of the sides and the size of its angles.
A regular octagon has eight sides of equal length … and eight angles of equal size – total 45 degrees at the center (360/8=45), interior angles 135 degrees [180-(360/8) = 135 ]
When your child is comfortable with tracing this shape, give them some shape worksheets to see how they can trace it.
2: Perpendicular distance from center of octagon to one side. (In ‘mathematics speak’ this perpendicular distance is called an APOTHEM!) In my diagram I have 2 (there are 8 total in an octave) which are the blue lines. You can see that these apothems are actually the radius of the circle in the octahedron (drawn in green).

The area of an octagon is calculated by finding the area of one of the isosceles triangles created by two lines drawn from one side and the midpoint of the octagon to each vertex. You multiply this answer by 8 because an octagon has eight of these triangles.
We have these 8 triangles in an octagon, so to get its area, we need to get the area of all eight triangles.
The perimeter of any shape is the sum of all the lengths of the shape – and the octagon is no different.
Step 1: Draw a straight line on your paper using your ruler and pencil. – This is what we call construction line.

Step 2: Locate a point on this line – this point is the first of the eight vertices.
Step 3: Using your protractor, find the 135 degree point for your first line and use the point you marked in the previous step to draw another construction line.
Step 4: Using your ruler, measure the side length of your octagon along these two lines and mark with a dot.
A quick check to make sure your octagon shape is correct is to measure all the side lengths with your ruler. If you did it right, each side will measure the same!

Using coloring sheets allows your child to start experimenting with triangles. A good first step is to encourage your child to color in adjacent triangles of the same color until the shape starts to look like ‘something’.
Maybe it’s a rectangle or a house! By doing this, your child will begin to understand the relationship between different shapes. You can find some great free geometric coloring pages to download and get started.

Well, if you’re not 100% sure what an octave is, don’t worry. I will start from the beginning. If this is starting to sound like your high school geometry class, don’t panic! We take it slow. 🙂
So, what is Octave? Let’s break it down. “Ashta” means eight and “gon” means shoulders. If you are also wondering “how many sides are there in an octagon”, that clears things up!

An octagon is a shape made up of eight straight sides and eight angles. (Think of a stop sign!) It has no curves and is a closed shape (no openings). If you still can’t imagine what an octagon looks like, scroll down a bit and check out the printables!
A shape must have eight sides to be an octagon! However, this does not mean that all sides of an octagon are of equal length. Which brings us to regular octaves vs. irregular octaves!
Well, regardless of whether an octagon is regular or irregular, “an octagon has the same number of sides: eight. However, the sides of a “regular” octagon are all the same length and the octagon has the same angle measures.
A little confused? If you’re wondering what an octagon looks like when it’s regular and regular, picture a stop sign (or scroll down and see the octagon shape printable below)—it’s a regular octagon!

Well, if you’ve been wondering what an octagon would look like or plan to use it as a coloring sheet or game piece, now you’re free to go. For the rest of us, it’s time to dust off those geometry skills. Don’t worry, I’m here with you!

Let’s start with some easy math! Figuring out how to find the area of an octagon can be a little challenging, but if you’re dealing with a regular octagon, the perimeter of the octagon is not that big. (Isn’t that a relief?) 🙂

In that formula, “L” is the side length of an octagon. All you have to do is take the length of one side and multiply it by eight! For an irregular octagon, you add all the lengths
