Days Of Winter Landscape And Aurora Photography In Iceland
Before we get into the different maps of Iceland, let’s first answer where Iceland is on the world map. Iceland is a European island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Norway and Greenland. Most of Iceland is south of the Arctic Circle, although the small island of Grímsi is inside the Arctic Circle.
Average temperatures in the capital, Reykjavik, are around 54 F (12 C) in the summer and around 33-35 F (1-2 C) in the winter. But the weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, with sunshine and snow falling minutes apart.
Its high latitude means you can experience the midnight sun in summer and long nights in winter, perfect for viewing the Northern Lights.
Iceland’s capital is Reykjavík, on the southwestern tip of the southern peninsula. About 135,000 people live in Reykjavík, which is about a third of the country’s population. If you include the surrounding townships of the capital, the population is around 220,000.
Iceland (national Geographic Adventure Map)
Iceland is divided into eight regions. Look at the map of Icelandic regions below – the regions are marked with numbers.
There is quite a bit of overlap between Northwest Iceland and Northeast Iceland. Sometimes they are collectively called North Iceland.
The currency of Iceland is the Icelandic Krona. Some larger hotels may accept payment in euros or US dollars – but you should always check before you travel. It is also important to check the exchange rate when preparing for your trip. Most places in Iceland take credit cards, even taxis, but it’s always wise to carry some Icelandic currency just to be sure.
While many travelers to Iceland are happy to stay in Reykjavik and travel every day, some prefer to travel the country on an epic road trip.

Booking a self-drive tour will help organize it for you and pre-book accommodation as you travel around the country. These driving maps of Iceland will help you choose which places to go if you plan your trip independently.
This is a road map where all the main attractions of Iceland are marked with different color labels. Feel free to zoom in to see the location of each attraction.
This Iceland attractions map includes the most famous waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers and beaches along the route. It’s also easy to stray slightly from the Ring Road to include some of the lesser known sights of the East Fjords or the beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland.
If you want to visit the northern or eastern regions of Iceland, you’ll want to drive the full circle from Reykjavík.
The Best & Most Useful Maps Of Iceland
It is about the same distance to drive from Reykjavík to the town of Egilstadir in East Iceland, either by northern or southern routes. Both routes show a completely different side of the country.
The Ring Road can be driven in six days, but the longer you take, the more sites you can see and the more time you can spend on them. For example, you can take a 10-day self-drive tour of the Ring Road and Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
The Westfjords are the second most remote area of Iceland after the uninhabited highlands. It is cut off from the ring road and requires a few detours to reach. But by adding it to the itinerary, you’ll completely circle Iceland, as you can see on this second Iceland driving map.
Many of the area’s roads are gravel, and the mountain roads can be snowy even in the summer, so you’ll need to take your time as you drive from one beautiful fjord to another.

The Westfjords are inaccessible in winter due to heavy snow, closed roads and avalanches, but they are magical in summer. So think of it as a map of unusual Iceland attractions.
You can take the Baldur ferry between Stikysjölmur and Brjansläkur in the Westfjords to cut down on the journey with an optional stop on the quiet island of Flatey, one of Iceland’s hidden gems.
If you want to spend two weeks exploring the entire country at an affordable price, this 14-day budget Ring Road Self Drive Tour is for you.
For those who prefer a little more luxury and a bathroom during their stay, this 14-day self-drive around Iceland and the Westfjords is also available.

You can also explore the beautiful Westfjords on your own. See the Westfjords map below for the main attractions:
The capital of the Westfjords region is the town of Isafjordur, home to over 2,500 people and an excellent base for exploring the sights of the remote Westfjords.
The attractions also include some of Iceland’s most remarkable birds, such as the Hornstrander Nature Reserve, home to arctic foxes and arctic terns and black guillemots. If you like bird watching, you should also visit the Latrabjarg bird cliffs. The cliffs are 9 miles (14 km) long and are the largest bird cliffs in Europe, so it’s a great place to see the famous Atlantic puffin.
While in the Westfjords, you can also visit the ‘Jewel of the Westfjords’, the spectacular Dyngendi Falls, which cascade over dramatic cliffs. We recommend visiting Rauðisandur beach, which is unusual for Iceland in that it has a natural reddish pink color rather than the usual volcanic black.
Iceland Circle Tour: Tour Begins October 1, 2021 (flight Departs Sept 30, 2021)
Try this two-day wildlife tour to see the animals you can see, or take an 11-hour walking tour through the Hornstrander Nature Reserve. There are great opportunities for kayaking in the Westfjords – you might even spot whales or dolphins on this 2-hour kayaking trip from Isafjordur.
This map of Iceland attractions features the best of South West Iceland, including the Golden Circle sites and many highlights on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
The Golden Circle is the country’s most popular sightseeing route and is a good choice for those who find the Westfjords more remote and those visiting in winter.
You can visit Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Geothermal Area and Thingvellir National Park. This includes natural scenery such as the Hrnfoss waterfall and man-made attractions such as the world-famous Blue Lagoon.
Map Of Iceland
Since the capital is located in the middle of the western attractions, you can visit all the major sites while staying in Reykjavík. Think of it as a highlight map of Iceland if you want to see the main attractions of the area
