Department Of Veterans Affairs Letterhead – Bake for Good is our umbrella name for everything we do here at King Arthur Flour to make the world a better place – through baking.

Our high school program, Bake for Good Kids, has taught over 200,000 “tweens” to bake – and share it with those in need.

“Learn – Bake – Share” is the program’s mantra. In support of the cause, schools across the country have received more than 850,000 donations of King Arthur Flour – which represents more than 1.1 million loaves of bread.

Bake for Good is also the umbrella of our partnership with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a non-profit organization that raises money – through bake sales – for children’s cancer research, “one cookie at a time.”

But there are other, less mundane, almost mundane ways that we use our baking skills to make life better – more fulfilling, less powerful, or joyful – for those around us.

My favorite peanut butter cookie is always received by the wonderful volunteers who clean up the sidewalks and walks at our local zoo. It’s amazing how easy it is, really, to please people – especially when cookies are involved!

However, recently we started a project that is very complex. Arthur Flour Community Relations Coordinator Julia Reed organized an event for local veterans from the White River Junction (VT) Veteran’s Administration Hospital, bringing them to the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center for a cornbread baking class. A gentleman told me a story about one of his earliest memories, of a bakery across the street from his home in the area where he grew up. Tarts are sold in good quantities, and every week he goes out and collects the tins, which are used to make bread, and they pay him a penny each for their return.

Another vet told me about how her grandmother cooked all day long, and the smell in the classroom brought out things she hadn’t remembered in decades.

They all agreed that it was good to get out of the VA school and away from their problems, if only for a few hours.

There is so much knowledge and gratitude in this room, and I am very happy to work for a company that will support an event like this.

On the handwritten note, “Thank you so much for the wonderful event! Everyone is walking around with a big smile today. It means a lot to the seniors in our hospital. All the best, Karen.”

Here’s to Bake for Good next month, as we go on our first ever Bake for Good tour, from Seattle, to the Minneapolis/St. Paul, then went to Los Angeles. We will meet with local bloggers in each city to teach them about yeast bread and baking techniques. Then we ask them to give back by using their new found knowledge to create some kind of house, sit for the poor and shelter the homeless.

Both events will donate 10% of profits from partner stores (Homegirl Cafe and The Grilled Cheese Truck) to Homeboy Industries, an organization that lives up to the Bake for Good mission. Homeboy’s mission is to help get high-risk ex-gang members off the streets and back on their feet by providing free job training, education and health and wellness services.
