Use this clever hack for long-lasting snowflakes. Dip your snowflakes into the melted candle wax. Then you can hang them as decoration. Why not add some glitter to the wax? I have been cutting snowman paper snowflakes for at least 20 years. This is one of my biggest party tricks, and by “party” I mean family Thanksgiving, and by “tricks” I mean things I like to do before and after eating pie. But really, it’s a big hit with kids (and adults!). I’ve tried to make it work at real parties, but it’s hard to find a hole in someone else’s house 😉

Aside from some delicate cutting practices, a snowman paper snowflake is very easy to cut. They are almost always cute and not manic. They’re pretty easy to imagine, and they have very simple “parts” – hole punch eyes, circle or diamond buttons, triangular carrot noses, you know what I’m saying.

. If you make that line a nice sharp fold, the cutting will be easier and you’ll have more predictable results (your snowman won’t be a cyclops).

Fold the bottom right corner of your paper into the top left corner – aim for about 1 inch inward from your top corner.

Repeat the process on the other side – fold the bottom left corner to the top right, aiming inward about 1 inch.

Fold it in 1/2 again, just enough to make a small crease in the middle of your paper. This small mark will mark the center of your paper and should be along the first fold (not the two open end sides). After making that mark, unfold your paper again so that it is only folded 1/2 time. (See the first photo to see what I mean).

2) Your next fold will be at an angle, from the center mark of your paper. Take the bottom right corner and fold it over the top left corner. Align the corner of your paper about 1 inch inside the top left corner. Again, look at the photo to see what I mean.

3) Repeat the process bringing the bottom left corner to the top right corner, aiming for about 1 inch inside the top right corner. You should now have a piece of paper that looks like a triangle. When you peek into your triangle, the edges of your paper should be tight against the seams of each fold. This is the key! If you have gaps, try folding again. (See my video at the bottom of this page to see how I refold when I have gaps).

4) Fold that triangle in half, making sure you have a nice sharp point. You are ready to cut!

Cut out the rest of the snowman’s body, making sure to leave the folded part in tact.

1) First, cut off your excess paper. If you look inside your folded paper snowflake, you will see that one folded paper is smaller than the other. Start there and cut an arc on the other side of the paper. You will end up with a pie pan that has a gentle curve.

2) Grab your hole punch and put on your fantasy glasses. You are going to visualize a snowman next to your large fold of paper snowflakes. To be more specific, you are going to imagine half of a snowman. Where will his eye be? This is where I want you to screw up. When you’re done, try giving it a smile with a hole punch (leave some space along the fold). If you don’t have imagination glasses with you, you can also make a 1/2 sketch of a snowman on your paper with your pencil.

3) If you have enough space above your snowman’s head, try giving him a top hat with your sharp scissors. Under her smile, give her some buttons.

Use your scissors to trim the excess paper from the top of the hat, around the snowman’s face and down to where his neck will be.

Make sure you give yourself a good amount of room, and pay attention to where your cuts are from your top hat. You don’t want to cut all the way to the border and give your snowman a flat head without a hat.

5) Now comes the hard part. what Wasn’t the last part the hard part? It was, but this part is more difficult, so it’s time to focus.

With your non-biting hand, pinch your ice paper very tightly. You don’t want your layers to slide around for this next cut.

With your scissors, bend the corner of the snowman to begin cutting out his body. When you get down about 1/2” you are going to sharpen your scissors and cut off a long rod arm. I like to give my snowman 3 fingers, but I’m not sure why, so give me as many fingers as you like! Or mittens! Your snowman’s arms should reach the second fold.

6) Now comes the hard part. Just kidding, the hard part is over! Now all you need to do is finish off the snowman’s body. Cut a small curve from the snowman’s armpit to the back bend. You have to love the folds there to hold your snowflake together. Cut the tip of the snowflake to show where the snowman’s body will end. What does it look like? Are you confident? You should be!

7) It’s time to reveal! Go slowly, and pay more attention to the arms and top hat. Sometimes the paper sticks together and the finely cut areas tear. What does it look like? Pretty right?

8) I like to flatten my snowflakes inside a book overnight so they are really flat. Then they’re ready to stick on background paper, hang in a window, tie to a gift, sneak under someone’s windshield wiper, etc.

That’s it! It wasn’t really that hard, right? Now you can keep paper, scissors and a hole punch in your pocket in case you want to pull this trick out at your next snow party. Let me know how it goes! 🙂
