John Batterson Stetson is credited with introducing the modern American Cowboy hat. The original square-brimmed, straight-sided, rounded-cornered hat was made by Stetson in 1865. This heavy, waterproof hat was usually colored, with a four-inch brim.

They have a simple elastic band in front to keep the head firmly in place and usually a small cap design on the outside of the crown. Hats are designed by making crowns and twists. Often, a more decorative hat is added.
