Cornucopia Art Projects – Cornucopia literally means “horn of plenty”. The cornucopia, a traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece or decoration, represents abundance and harvest with fruits and vegetables flowing from a horn or horn-shaped basket.
For this year’s Thanksgiving craft, the kids used air-dried clay to create a cornucopia. Air dry clay is lightweight and easy for little hands to make. We used fruits and vegetables and a photo of a cornucopia as inspiration. During crafting, we talk about Thanksgiving, cropping, shapes, colors, and size comparisons. My 4 and 5 year olds enjoyed recreating pumpkins, apples, carrots and grapes as well as some indoor vegetables. My daughter adds eyes to each meal. I also joined the fun of work; Air-dry clay isn’t just for little kids!

Cornucopia Magnet Craft Kit
Work on a craft tray (we use parchment paper for craft printers) or parchment paper taped to a table with masking tape.
Air-dried clay begins to dry as soon as it is exposed to air, but it takes 1-2 days to dry completely, depending on the thickness of the sculpture (follow the instructions for drying time). During drying, place the sculpture on wax paper to prevent the clay from sticking or staining the surface.
Once the colors are mixed together, it is very difficult to separate them. Create a marbled effect by blending, but not completely, two colors.
Use a rolling pin or vertical cylinder to roll the clay into a flat circle about 1/4 inch thick. Fold the clay circle around the cardtock cone and trim off the excess to make smooth edges. Add details with a toothpick, maybe a skull shape, waves or just random lines.

Another way of making a cone is to roll a long clay “snake”. Wrap the “snake” around the cardstock cone so that the edges touch. Keep rolling until the cone reaches the desired size. Press the threads together to make a solid cone.
Let the clay dry for a few minutes and remove the dictionary. Fill the tips of the cones with clay to close the shape.
Form another piece of clay into a flat semicircle. Attach the semi-end to the cone to form a “friend” that flows down.
Place fruits and vegetables, or pictures, on the table in front of the child. Working on one object at a time, make the clay look like a fruit or vegetable. This is a great opportunity to talk and compare shapes, colors and textures. Also talk about foods that children like to eat for Thanksgiving.

Roll the clay into a ball for an apple or a bent stick shape for a banana. Add seeds to the pumpkin or grits to the edge of the corn using a table knife or toothpick.
Place the clay fruits and vegetables in the cone, filling up to maintain the shape of the cone. Press the gift firmly into the cone to seal, but be careful not to break the “friend”.
