To be honest, I was looking for a twist on the popular single cakes at various festivals. When my daughter asked if we could make a special meal together for National Cat Day, I was already trying to think of something to do before it was too late. Yes, it’s a thing… Anyway, we have 3 cats, 2 are purebred and my daughter loves them. So, isn’t it weird to make a cake out of your pet? So the two ideas came together beautifully. Since it’s fall, we decided to fill the cake with changing pumpkin and chocolate. But of course you can just make it chocolate or any other flavor.

The Nyan Cat Cake

After flattening the cake layers, I cut them in half to make thinner layers, so the cake slice will have fine lines. For extra stability, especially with long narrow cakes, I’ll put it full thickness next time. My daughter loves it and wanted to cover the entire cake with black frosting, but I wanted to share how the black frosting was achieved. It’s easier than you think, but it’s so confusing! I still see lots of black frosting everywhere!

It was something we always did when we were little. The idea is simple – you start with standard-shaped cakes (usually square or round), then cut and assemble them to create fun designs.

This cat is made from two 9-inch round cakes and is this year’s Halloween cake. I used the star method to decorate, but you can use caramel or coconut or frost this guy. If you want to follow the star pattern, I’ve included a decorative template along with a cutting template for those of you who can’t make it by hand.

Begin by baking two 9-inch round cake pans. I use cake mix and divide it into two pieces to get two cakes. I also use the cake mix recipe (below) because I bake quite a bit of cake, but any regular cake recipe will work as long as you can double it. However, avoid angel food or cakes that are too light, as they tend to crumble when you cut them.

I also made a double garlic recipe by keeping some of the garlic before adding cocoa to create the texture.

Once the cakes are completely cooled, use this template to cut out one of the cakes without leaving the other.

Now that you’ve cut your cake, assemble it on a cake board (a piece of foil lined cake tin). The link looks like this:

I referred to the cross section template to use for the search. I couldn’t decide on the eyes, so there are two types. I used circles for this cake.

I cut out the eyes, nose and cheeks and then placed them on the cake and used the frosting to pipe them around and after the toothpick.

The final step is to fill the rest of the cake with the star rim and chocolate frosting. Needless to say, this takes some time and requires good hand strength. I actually calm him down…

You’ll notice that I moved the tail out of the way to make the body. I actually did it when the inside edge of the tail was off, then I put the tail in place and finished the top and outside edges. You can buy a kitty cake topper or a cat face, but I think it’s more fun to make your own version at home.

To make a kitty-shaped cake, bake the cakes in a 6-inch round pan, using only one cake layer. This created the perfect height for the gear-sized Kit Kats we’ll show you below. I used a smaller square cake for the ear and just cut off the corners to make a perfect triangle.

Except that Kit Kats are one of my favorite candy bars of all time. A layer cake works great because it has an outer layer of caramel against the softness of the cake. The added waffle gives the book a texture combination that’s perfect.

My favorite cake combination to pair with the frosting is the classic vanilla because it contrasts the chocolate so well, I think strawberry would be a good combination.
