Growing up, my mom came up with some clever craft ideas. The projects alone were always fun and all the better if they made a clever gift.

Candy Cane Christmas Trees Craft

When I became a mother, I realized it was important for my children to give them gifts that had real meaning. Every December we choose a fun project that they would like to give to their fathers and grandparents. Over the years, they have painted terracotta flower pots and wooden bird houses, made bird feeders from pine wood, and created unique decorations using everything from shells to school photos.

By putting some time and creativity into a project, they’ll always have something to give them with pride on Christmas morning – much more than if I gave them a few bucks to buy them something. Even wrapping presents becomes a bit of an event, even if it takes a whole roll of tape!

Below you will find some craft ideas that we have often made over the years. My youngest son loved making pastries as a craft. Two bags of beads and a pack of pipe cleaners could keep him busy for hours. These are not only fun gifts that children can make themselves, but they are also creative kits.

Here’s an easy craft to make with kids: Make pipe cleaner candies to hang on the Christmas tree. Gifting and giving is also fun for young children. You can find the following items at your local craft store.

If you’re looking for a fun way to decorate your window this Christmas, this is the craft for you! They are fast, easy and a lot of fun. You can even create different sizes by changing the print size. A window of different sizes, made by each member of the family, will look great!

Print out the printable sugar cane template below. If you don’t have a printer, you can trace the outline of the cane with a Sharpie or similar pen. If you want to make larger or smaller candies, please enlarge or reduce the printable size.

Start by making a candy cane suncatcher. Cut out the outline of the candy cane printable, make a small cut through the black line and cut out all the white paper on the inside of the candy cane. Prepare enough contact paper to cover one side of the candy. Peel it off and carefully stick the candy cane black side down to the contact paper. Cut the tissue paper into small squares.

Now it’s time to decorate the candy cane. Use small squares of tissue paper to cover the inside of the candy cane. Lay them flat and slightly overlapping. The overlapping area creates a nice effect when you stand in front of the window.

Once covered with tissue paper, cut another sheet of clear contact paper and cover the sugar cane. Using scissors, carefully cut off the outer part of the candy. Add some rhinestones or other decorations to increase the fun.

Stick to your window! We used some blue tack, but if you’re concerned about the blue tack showing on the outside of the glass, you can also use a small amount of glue.

The art of tearing is great for practicing fine motor skills! But it takes a lot of sweat and tears

I copied the candy cane template onto white construction paper to make it a bit more sturdy, then we gave our kids a piece of red construction paper and they tore it away!

To make the bow, we cut the corners off a 3″x3″ green square and rolled it up to form a circle. Then we cut the 3″x3″ square in half diagonally, making 2 triangles. We glue the tip of the triangle behind the circle to make an arc. Next, we cut the 2″x4″ rectangle into two long pieces, cutting a small triangular shape at each end. Glue them to the back of the circle and voila!

We also made a Polar Express art project using black construction paper and oil pastels! It was a targeted draw, but each child did their part and they turned out very cute!
