Brownie Vest Patch Placement 2020 – Many women choose to make retired badges as a way to complete badges for their personal interests that do not have a matching current badge. Or, they are like my daughters and overachievers or perfectionists. 🙂 Adding retired badges to the existing line of badges doesn’t always result in a neat looking outfit, but it does show a commitment to learning something from the older set of offerings. These photos are just my photo-based notes on how we are incorporating the 2001 badge series into my girls’ Girl Scout experience.
When my oldest daughter was a Brownie, she finished all the existing badges that our troops weren’t going to do, and then begged for more things she could do. That’s when we discovered the retired badges and went down the rabbit hole. I found 10 of them on a vest at Goodwill and carefully saved them. We bought a second hand copy of the badge book and she did them all in 2 weeks. He then started looking at the other badges in the book and asked if we could find more of them. We eventually found them all, and she finished them all before her sophomore year at Brownie. We had to use the back of her vest to fit it, but she loved it:

In the summer of 2017, GSUSA released a whole bunch of new STEM badges and tours. I thought there was no way to fit it all in, and do the full set of retired people, but that’s what my younger daughter wanted to do. It’s tight, but it was possible! She bridged before 2019-2020 and managed to get them all in!

My senior continued her love of retired badges at her junior level. We had a plan to get them all to fit in, but it didn’t survive that all-STEM addition. He decided to move all the existing badges to the travel side and fill the flag side as far as it would go before spilling over to the belt.
We found retired badges on some municipalities, so she had a total of 127 retired ones to win. We ended up placing 42 of the round info badges and the 4 rectangular insignia on the flag side of his vest, 37 of the remaining retired info badges on the front of the XL belt, and the final 48 on the back.
The intention of the Cadets is to put all the IPs on one wing and divide the tiers into a cadet only vest and a senior/ambassador combination vest. You can put 84 IP addresses on one belt if you put 39 on the front and 45 on the back. It still leaves room for the flag, council ID, and troop number.
They drive me crazy with how much they want to do, but I’m very proud of them. <3
