Brownie Girl Scout Vest Patch Placement – NOTE: The information below is correct as of the badge release date in July 2018. I no longer have all of these badges/vests available to play with skins. I’m not going to try to rework the extra placement guides at the moment, but I won’t remove them as they’re still useful for counting what you think might fit. 🙂

I created all of these images because the official uniform guides provided by GSUSA are not to scale and do not contain photographs. The clipart style is a great guide to the basics, but it’s hard to use when you have very active troops or scouts that are earning all (or most) of the available badges and travel.

The images below show all the current badges available for her level as of July 2018. Not every branch or every girl will make every badge, but it will help you figure out how to match things up if you are a GIRL. which has achieved this goal. As a side note, if your squad isn’t wearing a badge, you can squash your squad numbers, stars, and bridges, and most of the time you’ll get a full row of slots for more badges.

I’ve tried a few different layouts and it looks like these 4 might be the cleanest. As a matter of fact, everyone still has a little more room to adapt to what comes next year as well.

I tried to put all the trips on the side of the tab like all the other levels do. It gets very busy but doable. If you do this, you can place the World Day of Global Thought and Action patches at the bottom of the other side and place 5 alternating rows of 4 (20 total) flower badges, or you may place alternating 7 rows of 4 (20 total) 28) flower badges. There are currently 12 non-travel related Flower Badges, so if they are released there is plenty of room for more.

If I move all the flower badges to the side of the flag, it looks MUCH cleaner. You can make 7 rows of 4 if you spread them out. This gives enough space to place the Global Action and World Thinking Day badges in a row, just above or just below the original 3 journeys on the side of the tab. Or just put GA and WTD in the back to make it less crowded. This gives room for 7 more Flower Badges if/when they are released.

This just goes to show what happens if you don’t lay out the rows of badges. They still fit 4 wide, but now only fit 6 rows high instead of 7. Only 3 floral patches can be added later with this arrangement. I suspect that the XXS/XS vest cannot be rearranged, so this design is probably the closest to what it would look like.

What Is The Correct Placement For Girl Scout Badges?

If you put the World Day of Global Thinking and Action awards on the back, you can just put Outdoor Journey on the side of the tab and it won’t look too chaotic. This leaves you room to complete the full 7 rows of 4 on the flag side. This design would have room for 10 additional flower badges on the flag side. And if you need to, you can also move one of the STEM rides and make it vertical in the seam.

Of all these, I think version 2 is my favorite, with or without Global Action and World Thinking Day on the front page. (While I would add badges in orderly rows as you earn them, I wouldn’t place them all like this to show how many match.) 🙂

This first example was done on a Medium 10-12 vest. No consistent direction has been given for the new Outdoor Journey. It’s built from existing normal badges, and the only way I could place them that didn’t look really weird was with a pyramid that looks like an inverted WoW journey. It also annoys me that the Take Action Project (TAP) badges for new rides are not facing downwards. This makes the new STEM Journeys no match at all. Forward…

With the addition of the 5 badges released in July 2018, I cannot fit everything into a medium vest unless I remove the annual World Day of Global Thought and Action badges. They need to be moved to the rear for this to work. Even then, I had to put the progressive badge kits on the side of the ride, and the Brownie Quest ride would go back a bit.

The example below is the same set of patches, but this time on a large 14-16 vest. It’s a little tight, but from the front everything fits. Personally, I think I’d prefer to move the World Day of Global Thought and Action awards to the back and use that space to place a few sets of progressive badges so it’s not so cluttered on the flag side.

I think it’s a 14-16 large vest, it’s definitely smaller than the XL my daughter has. Again, no consistent direction was given for the new Outdoor Journey. It is built from existing normal badges and the official location guide glues them together with the rest of the normal badges. It doesn’t make much sense to me, so I moved it past the trip with the rest of the trip.

This is the cleanest design I could use and to make it happen 2 of the progressive badge sets had to be moved down the driver’s side.

I used to have a section here where I showed C/S/A combo vests. The badges released in July 2018 were too many to put all at once. I’ve moved the C/S/A combo section that I created in July 2017 down this page, but in the future it’s impossible to fit everything into one big vest. A lot of girls have already split the khaki vest into a Cadette Only vest for 3 years and then a Senior/Ambassador vest for the last 4 years, so that’s what I’m going to show in my photos.

The following 2 examples are just different ways to set up Leadership in Action (LIA) awards and have fun with outdoor and STEM travel location. The vest is big.

Does your Cadette want to wear a belt instead? If they’re willing to sacrifice fun patches, you can put travel patches and ID badges on the front and normal patches on the back and everything will fit, EXCEPT you can’t put 4 new LIAs on the front without tying a very, very low knot.

If you’ve opted for the new Senior Vest, here’s an example that doesn’t include the Cadette shields. Once again, we have enough room to bring World Thinking Day and the Global Action Awards back to the forefront. It’s a big vest again.

I also made band samples for Senior and Ambassador. Anyone can put a full tour kit on the front with identification patches and all normal badges, as well as the annual World Day of Global Thinking and Action awards on the back. They work with the pin version or the patch version of the original 3 rides. The three inverted badges at the top are just to show how wide normal badges are. They fit well.

I’m going to leave these photos here although they are only up to date at the time of the badge release in July 2017. 29 new badges have been added for the combined Cadet, Senior and Ambassador levels and you just can’t add that many vests to them. If someone is trying to wear the same vest for 7 years, these are still good examples to try, but the examples are a bit incomplete. It’s hard to fit 7 years of memories in one vest. The khaki vest worn in these photos is large. As mentioned above, outdoor travel doesn’t really have a proper placement or combination pattern, so I did my best to make everything look nice and fit. That white sheet under the wings says it’s a place for pins. You can fit them all in this space or next to the bridges.

These 2 examples are my attempts to get all current badges for all 3 tiers in one vest. World Thinking Day and the Global Action Awards had to be dedicated. In 7 years from the cadets to the ambassador, there would be 14 of them and they simply wouldn’t fit. If you take them out of the equation, there are 2 moderately ingenious ways to combine everything else:
