Place Value Anchor Chart
Place value is an important math concept for children to understand. To understand numbers and their value they need to understand place value.
This will give you some ideas for some local activities that you can do at home with your child.
When we write numbers we use ten digits. These numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
In the number 4528, the value of the number 4 is 4000 because it is in thousands of lines (4 x 1000 = 4000).
Place Value Relationships
The value of the number 2 is 20 because it is in the tenth column (2 x 10 = 20)
Our base ten number system. This means that the value of each place value column is ten times greater than the row to its immediate right.
For example, if we put 1 in each place value column we have the number 1111.
For children to feel confident in reading, writing and working with numbers (especially large numbers), they need to have a good understanding of place values.

If you’re helping your child with place values, you can help them get the message right from the start.
We use these numbers to generate numbers. So, for example the number 324 is a 3 digit number. It is made up of 3 numbers: 3, 2 and 4.
The confusion occurs with numbers up to 9, where the number and the number are the same. When we get to 10, it’s easy to distinguish: 10 is a number. And that number is made of 2 digits: 1 and 0.

There are 4 different locations of the charts in the download at the end of this post. You can use whatever is appropriate for your child’s age/ability.
The first tip is good if your child is just starting out with the local price. It has only one, ten, hundred and thousand:
The third form is a price chart showing the thousands to thousands. This recipe allows you to generate numbers up to 3 digits. This is the code of the image:

The last form is the local price list. There is enough space to write numbers below the place value statement.
You can trim this map to any line you want because this map has a lot (millionths to thousands!).
If you want to help your child get local and want some ideas for activities to try, here are some suggestions.
You can do all of these tasks using one of the first 3 place value charts (which you can download at the end of this post). Just choose the location of the price chart that suits your child and their abilities.

In addition to the map, all you need is a set of number cards. Just cut out 10 small pieces of card and write the numbers 0 to 9 on the card (as in the picture below for Activity 1).
Explain the numbers by showing your child which number goes on the place value line. For example:
“This number has 7 in the hundreds line, 8 in the thousands line, 0 in the tens and 1 in the system”
When your child has written the number, have them read it back to you. (in our example 8 thousand, 7 hundred one).
