The Ural Mountains stretch indirectly north-south about 2,500 kilometers (1,550 mi) from Russia to Kazakhstan. 250-300 million years old, the Ural Mountains are one of the oldest mountains. Also known as China’s lifeline, the Yangtze River drains one-fifth of the country’s land area, hosts one-third of the population, and contributes to China’s economy.
The Tigris and Euphrates rivers rise in the highlands of eastern Turkey, pass through Syria and Iraq, and meet near Qurna, Iraq, where they empty into the Persian Gulf. Mesopotamia, the region between two rivers, was the cradle of the world’s first civilizations, including the Sumerian and Akkadian empires.
