If the file has been modified from its original state, some details may not show the modified file. Over the past few years I’ve made a few floor maps that I could use to make the original.
A subject map is posted on this site (searchable by country and subject). These custom floor-maps were originally created by hand in Keynote, Apple’s presentation software that competes with PowerPoint. In the coming weeks, I will prepare all of these maps and then make them available for download on this site in Keynote and PowerPoint formats. Feel free to use these customizable maps as you wish. All I ask you to do is keep the source note on the cards:
Customizable base maps were created by mapping geopolitical unit shapes to available base maps. Once the outlines are done, landscape or province shapes can be easily manipulated with a few simple clicks, you can change the ground color, border color and thickness, etc. Keynote’s “shapes” feature makes it easy to draw on a map to show other features. Shapes can also be dragged out of place and put back where they belong (to place shapes correctly, Keynote’s “guidance” must be turned off). Similar functions are available in PowerPoint, although I don’t use PowerPoint, so I’m not sure what is allowed. (But check out these basic instructions. How to manipulate these cards in PowerPoint.)
These cards can be used in the classroom. When students are provided with an organized map of a part of the world and a list of data related to the same area, they can create their own thematic map. An example is a map of African countries and a list of African countries by GDP per capita. This activity will help the students to learn the location and shapes of the areas in question (in this case, the African countries) and they will be able to understand the examples indicated they are better than just looking at a map made by someone else. Doing so can also be useful for teaching students how to select appropriate breaks in the data for effective map visualization, using different colors in the map, etc. . You can also scatter landscapes and ask students to collect maps as a game. Unfortunately, the shapes don’t fall into place, but they still work well.
Political Map Of Africa
I am starting this project by making a single map of African countries. Several different versions of this map are available in the PowerPoint and Keynote files below this article. The first is a simple map of the former countries of the region (although some African island countries are separated: Cape Verde, Seychelles and Mauritius, and the French department of Reunion). Boxes with the word “text” next to them can be used to create a map. The second is the same map, but with the addition of country names. Since all maps are custom, these names can easily be removed to (re)create the original map. There are two third cards
Changes in the original political map that were not recognized by the international community: the independence of Somaliland and the expansion of Morocco in most of the Western Sahara, and the independence of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the remaining regions. The countries of Libya and (the rest of) Somalia are still shown on this map as normal countries, but can easily be changed by the user (for example, turned into a dark shade of gray). The final map contains a base map that was used to create a preliminary physical map of Africa. This version of the map can be used in many ways. If you want to include rivers or other physical features on your custom map, just click on each country, set their opacity settings to zero, follow the steps right, then click on the terrain again and set the opacity to 100 percent.
Note that these maps are low resolution. Small objects, such as the many islands on the map of Africa, should be reproduced as simple circles or triangles. Furthermore, the boundary lines between countries are not well drawn: therefore, the boundaries are somewhat unevenly thick. I personally find the end result pleasing because these cards look so simple. Other users, however, disagree. However, users can manually adjust the boundary lines to be more precise. It took me a lot of work, but in the end I decided that the map in question was good.
Note also that the physical base map was made before the independence of South Sudan. So, on my custom maps, South Sudan is a layer over Sudan before 2011. For some reason I forgot to put South Sudan back on the map (with the rivers added ) is posted here. Other custom maps I will post later will not have these problems.
