These sparkly ribbons would look amazing on the dessert table at a child’s birthday party. Planning a party can be very expensive, so I’ve created this DIY guide to birthday party streamer decoration ideas that you can easily make at home.

I love streamers because they are so cheap and can add so much color to your party. If you liked the ribbons, you may want to make other decorations with your crepe paper:

You can customize the colors of the party decorations by getting strips of crepe paper in the color of the party decorations. I chose yellow and pink ribbons to go with the lemonade birthday theme.

I already had all the materials for this project at home. You will need scissors, thread and a sewing needle.

I wish I had chosen a longer needle for this project. This would make the stringing process much faster. I didn’t measure the amount of yarn I added to my needle, it was probably two hands.

Each wreath I made used a roll of crepe paper. I bought my crepe paper at the Dollar Tree, but you can also find it at Walmart or Amazon.

One of the things I love about this project is that it is very forgiving. There is no perfect way to make your crepe paper wreath. If you make a mistake, no one will know!

Unroll part of your crepe paper. About an inch into the roll, insert the needle and then come out another inch beyond your first placement (as shown in the image below)

Once you get going, you’ll need to pull the gathered crepe paper down the length of the wire. Continue until you reach the end of the crepe paper roll.

Join Our Facebook Group Melody’s first birthday party was an ice cream themed party. The colors were generally pastel with a focus on pink, blue and yellow. I planned for him to smash the cake in front of our fireplace for everyone to see. I also wanted to open presents in the same place. I knew from the presents that we would be sitting, so I wanted to find some kind of decoration to cover the actual fireplace. I already had banners and balloons for the fireplace. I did a little searching online and found where someone had used tapes to cover a fireplace, so I decided to give it a try!

I bought the yellow, pink and blue ribbons from Target. I did some testing during the week of her party to see what would be the best way to hang the ribbons. An error occurred with the normal gift wrapping tape. It only took a few hours and I knew it should be done the day before. Here is my proof:

I ended up buying white duct tape from Walmart. I opted for duct tape because I knew it would hold up, and I wasn’t worried about ruining what I was going to stick it to. If you were doing it to a wall or sensitive surface, you might consider duct tape. I chose white because the surface was white. They have a wide variety of colors to choose from.

The project took about three hours…maybe even four. My best friend Emily made this while I worked on other decorations around the house. We did it the day before not knowing how long it would take. Granted, we had two babies/toddlers running around, but I really didn’t expect it to last more than an hour. She attached two strips together to the bottom of the fireplace (tile). She twisted them (still together) and stuck them on the mantelpiece. Sometimes you had to add an extra piece of tape on top to keep the two tapes together. Below is the result:

Below are some photos of Melody eating her cake. You can see the bars behind her perfectly. I ended up not doing the high chair decoration because the decorations behind it turned out so well.

The streamers lasted over a week. We put them on Friday, and kept them until her birthday (next Thursday). I actually didn’t take them off until the Tuesday after his birthday so they lasted almost 12 days and only one fell off the entire time! I used all the cheap stuff, strips of crepe paper, plastic tablecloths, butcher paper and cardboard. I mean, I probably only spent $7-$8 on decorations.

Diy: Perfectly Pink Birthday Decorations (in A Snap)

– I hung blue ribbons from the ceiling to imitate waves. After all, we were under the sea. I didn’t do it as perfectly or straight, just a little random like real waves would be. The blue “bubbles” are cardboard circles sewn together with very long tails of thread that I used to glue them to.

– Paper plates are just red plates from Walmart. I used red cardstock to cut out the legs and hot glued them on.

The tablecloth is actually two. Underneath is dark blue. Then I cut a light blue one in half and put it in the middle like a coffee table. I wanted to cut it like a “wave” but thought it would take too long.

– For the background wall, I cut yellow butcher paper to make it look like sand. It was only a few meters long so it was cheap, cheap. Then I took green strips and twisted them against the wall to look like seaweed. This doesn’t take as long as it seems. i promise 🙂 But it uses a ton of tape.

I was SO sad when I woke up the next morning to find that the tip had started to fall off and split, but Owen didn’t care. However, he informed me that squid actually have fins on their heads and ten tentacles, not eight…I’m glad it turned out so well, to be honest. 🙂

Owen likes seafood. I didn’t want to risk finding out his friends weren’t, so we kept it simple.

Goldfish crackers, calamari dogs, “starfish” sandwiches that were really PB&J cut like stars, shark teeth mozzarella…

We call the grapes on a skewer “coral”. Owen, in fact, did a lot of skewering. It was a great childish task.

We also had orange soda fish ice cubes in blue kool-aid. I have a picture but it was blurry! curse You can see it in the image below. The ice fish mold is from IKEA.

The jars are baby food jars. Since we don’t have a baby to eat, I saved it to interfere with other things. Bananas are an excellent addition to pancake batter. Zucchini, carrots, and sweet potatoes are a great way to add more vegetables to a regular spaghetti sauce.

All the lids were silver so I just put a quick coat of silver acrylic paint on the top and sides of the lid to cover all the letters.

Add your animal, some glitter and glycerin (you don’t need a lot), blue water to the top, then hot glue the lids on.

Some covers turned out better than others, I’ll admit. Owen’s is fine too, but Reid’s is leaking so we’re keeping it upright. I’m sure some kind of water glue would be better, but that takes at least a full day to cure and is toxic.

Tip: Mix in some blue water first. To get a bright enough blue color, you need 2 drops per 1 liter. I think I watered it down even more after that. If you add food coloring directly to the jar, the water will be too dark.

I made this game board on Picnik. Feel free to save it to your computer and use it if you want. Size is for 11×17 paper. I printed it on glossy card stock. When the party was over, we hung it on Owen’s door.

We also tried this seaweed balloon game. The goal was to keep the balloon shark afloat with balloons of green algae. It has become a wild balloon fighting game. 🙂

It’s basically like a hot potato. We played the Jaws theme song as we passed the puffer shark
