Radar was more often a source of comfort not only for Big Bird, but also for his friends: in episode 3651 he was loaned to Baby Natasha, and in episode 3526 he spends the night with Mary in the hospital. As one of Big Bird’s greatest valuable assets, Radar even has the power to restore his memory when Big Bird contracted memory loss in episode 3396.
A scrapped multi-episode story arc would have seen the radar launched into space, coinciding with the inclusion of the prop in the launch of the real Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. The unused bid later returned to to become the bow of the season. Slimey went to the moon.
Over the years, Radar has been featured frequently in Sesame Street coloring books and picture books, and in the early 1980s, a Radar stuffed toy was released. Radars were also featured in Follow That Bird, where Big Bird sent the radar ahead in “special dispatch, bear mail” to avoid being seen.
The stuffed bear was named by Big Bird artist Caroll Spinney as a tribute to actor Gary Burghoff, who played Walter “Radar” on O’Reilly’s M*A*S*H.
