Pumpkin carving is a great Halloween family activity for kids of all ages (though adults should care for the pumpkins). Children will love to dig inside the pumpkin, and the finished product will give your home a fun and scary atmosphere on October 31. With the help of stencils, you can make pumpkin lanterns for any theme! We switch back and forth between using stencils and handing them out by hand, but for the last few years the kids have been enjoying choosing stencils.

Allison Waken is a wife, mother of two boys, and a native of Phoenix, Arizona. She has been creating inspirational content for All for the Boys since 2011. Allison loves to travel, watch movies and spend as much time as possible with her family while she can! Halloween is almost here and there will be lots of fun costume parties this weekend. If you haven’t carved your pumpkin yet or want to add more decorations, it’s never too late! Especially when it comes to such a fun and easy craft.
Pumpkin crafts are the best way to carve pumpkins right now. Not only will they last forever, they’re cheap and nothing to do with dirty slurry. Although I really like roasted and salted pumpkin seeds…
I picked up a small pumpkin from Michael’s for this DIY. While large pumpkins allow for more intricate and larger designs, it also means you’ll have to carve more! Using a small pumpkin means less carving time, and it will be easier for you to find a place for it if you live in an apartment or don’t have enough space.

What better theme to carve a pumpkin than Batman?! This year marks the 20th anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series, so I thought I’d honor it by choosing a BTAS carving pattern that I found for free on this site. I used a razor blade to cut out the pieces that needed to be traced on my pumpkin.
Before I stenciled the pumpkin, I decided that I wanted the pumpkin to be black. I love the classic and familiar look of the orange pumpkin, but the black color suits my Batman theme better, and the black pumpkin is much easier to keep as a decoration after the Halloween season than the orange pumpkin. Black goes with everything!
After painting the pumpkin from the spray can, I applied the stencil to the surface and traced the image on the pumpkin with a pencil. Since I was working with a small surface and I was afraid that the tape might damage the painted pumpkin, I just held the stencil in place with my hands while painting.
Then it’s time to cut! You can find pumpkin carving kits anywhere this time of year. I bought a carving tool from Walmart for $4. Carving a craft pumpkin is similar to carving a real pumpkin. I can cut this pumpkin while watching TV. I love crafting while watching shows!

At this point, your pumpkin is carved and ready to display, it just needs some lights! You’ll need a battery-powered tea light to light the carved pumpkin. They even have flickering elements so they look like real candles! I didn’t want to cut the top of my pumpkin the way you do a real pumpkin, so instead I cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin for the candle to pass through.
Carved pumpkins really shine at night when lit up, but I want my pumpkins to look cool even in the daylight and work as post-holiday decorations. I decorated the moon section of my cave house with gold rhinestones so that Batman’s silhouette was outlined by the yellow moon that glowed day and night!
In one easy day, I had painted, cut, decorated and was ready to display my pumpkin! While I love real pumpkins and childhood memories of carving them, handmade pumpkins are more practical and enjoyable to work with. You can decorate and change them to your heart’s content and not have to worry about them breaking and all your hard work going to waste! Depending on how you cut and finish them, they can even be stylish pieces that will be worn all year round.

To get started, you will definitely need some carving tools. I use Kemper clay carving tools and find them very durable. Basically you need one large loop for the skin and 2-3 different sizes for the details.
Once you have scraped off the skip, you want to start mapping your face. Cut out the eye area to show the brown line, as well as the mouth area. Make the eyes deep enough that you can make something like a nose.
I usually start with the eyes (because they are the window to the pumpkin’s soul). I wanted to make sure I could actually do it, so I started with a more complex round eye first. Don’t be afraid to go deep (but don’t go too deep). For the iris and pupil, I cut out two concentric circles, with the innermost pupil. While I was doing this, I also started cutting some lines around the eyes to add shape and depth.

Once the eyes are done, you’ll want to start with the mouth. I started drawing the more interesting side of the mouth, first drawing the skin layer, then the gums, then the teeth. Here I also started to add more lines and details around his mouth.
Then make a simplified mouth on the other side. I made sure to add a smile wrinkle on the side to make him look more serious.
At this point, you can also begin to define the shape of the face by cutting out the sides and making different “edges” around the face.
After that, there are really touches – more wrinkles, nostrils, eyebrow hair, forehead wrinkles, smoothing sharp corners and removing other impurities from the lines. All in all, you just want to clean it up a bit. To properly celebrate Halloween, every home should have pumpkin decorations. The stencil used to carve the pumpkin is a type of pumpkin craft.
Pumpkin Carvings Templates That The Kids Can Do
Templates are necessary for creating pumpkin carving stencils, as they are additional tools for carving the pumpkin body. There are many different patterns for Halloween.
Jack-O-lantern serves as an illustration of a commonly seen pattern. The superhero template, for example, can be used if you have an idea and want to carve a pumpkin that is different from the usual. Choose the type of superhero character you want to use in your superhero template. Batman, for example.
To make this pumpkin decoration, first gently scoop out the pumpkin flesh with a spoon. Next, you’ll need an online Batman template print to carve the pumpkin. It is necessary.
Once the template has been downloaded and printed, you can start carving your pumpkin with
