Ballerina Snowflake – The curtain is ready to rise for a trio of lovely ladies. Our version of the popular Snowflake Ballerinas combines two great ideas – Snowflake Ballerinas originally designed by a Russian blogger named Lelia (sadly her site is no longer online) and the work of Julia Monroe at AllSparkledUp.com.
What I like about Julie’s paper ballerinas is adding colored glitter to make the ballet shoes, top and some bling in the ballerina’s hair. She used a variety of honeycomb garland to make the skirt, but I think the ballerina snowflake is more fun and her family would rather have the blank paper than the honeycomb stuff Julie used.

I hope Julie doesn’t mind if I watermark the photos. I wanted to make sure people give her credit for the glitter idea as well as the honeycomb idea.

Not wanting to run afoul of anyone’s copyright, I started the ballerina snowflake project by making a trio of ballerina templates. I tried to make it with a good finger position, but that involved too much good cutting for such a simple project.
The skirt on my snowflake ballerina template is designed to help hold and spread the cut snowflakes. If you want to use my password template for another project, you may need to remove or replace the skirt. Depending on how your snowflakes turn out, sometimes it can look better if you trim the skirt further.
Just click on the template to see the full size version. I tried to make the line a little lighter, so if you miss it when you cut it, it won’t show. The file is a simple .gif to save bandwidth and secure all prints the same way.
I recommend printing the ballerina template on cardboard. Using copy / standard 20 pound paper works, but ballerinas also do not hold up. It will also hold up better to be glued and glittered.

After you print and cut out the ballerina template, remove the glue and glitter to add the blouse, ballerina slippers, and hair band. If you want to skip this step, your ballerina might look better if you cut two small buns on top of the template that holds them.
I generally use a sheet of copy paper and fold one corner over to the other side of the paper to make a folded triangle with a little extra on top. Fold corner 2 to corner 1, then fold three times in the same way – tip to tip. You end up with a four point snowflake.
For snowflake ballerinas, I like to join again to make 8 points. The paper layer will be difficult to cut. So I generally make a curved bottom to create a skirt-like look and make one or two cuts on the folded sides. Then I opened the last fold and cut out the snowflakes in a typical way. I hope that and the pictures will show what I mean.
After you open the snowflake, gently bend (do not fold) the ballerina and slide the legs and skirt in the center of the snowflake. You need an opening about an inch or so wide. Don’t worry if it’s too small, just fold the snowflake back and cut the opening a little bigger.

And now that the curtain has all risen and the orchestra is playing the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, here are two more ballerina designs. I left one without glitter for comparison.
With this project I learned quickly; the better the glitter, the prettier the finished project. Our best results come from using an ultra-fine dust-like glitter.
We tried using stuff from a giant bottle of cheap glitter that we thought was a bargain at a 100 buck store. It looks terrible; it is settled in lumps and pieces and the shoes toe out look like boots.
This project works best with almost powder-like glitter. The items used are in small packages; again from the shop 100 øre. I think it is sold for nail decoration, rather than crafts. It’s surprising how far it goes considering how small the containers are.

If you don’t have time to hunt for good glitter, we found this glitter pack on Amazon – it even has a pink that is very similar to what we used; and also has a beautiful purple color.
Let’s face it, most crafters love the shiny, sparkly goodness that can only come from glitter. But unfortunately, no one loves (OK, maybe me) to see carpets and floors shine when the work is done.
Apply glitter glue to a clean sheet of paper. If you are careful, you can scoop up the excess and use it on another ballerina or put it back in the container. Working with a piece of paper will at least help prevent your home, children, and even family pets from looking like a snow ballerina. Calisthenics athletes jump.
